Rwanda rallies efforts against human trafficking
More Rwandan leaders have voiced concern over reports of human trafficking in the country.
Rwanda’s First Lady Jeannette Kagame is among those who have added their voice against the cross border crime.
There have been calls in the country in recent times for more vigilance following reports that Rwanda was acting as a source as well as transit route for victims of human trafficking.
At least 153 cases of human trafficking were registered since 2009 in the east African country with some of them involving traffickers who use Rwanda as a transit route for victims.
Majority of the victims are normally young girls below the age of 35, according to police.
The victims are reportedly taken to Uganda, Mozambique, Tanzania, United Arab Emirates, Zambia, Malawi and Asia.
Speaking at a national dialogue on human trafficking in Kigali on Friday, Mrs Kagame called for collective efforts to stamp out human trafficking, gender based violence and drug abuse.
The First Lady emphasized that Rwanda has previously fought against drug abuse, and there is need to review the progress.
“The linkage between drug abuse, gender based violence and human trafficking is the reason we are to fight these crimes concurrently. We are informed that most of the children trafficked are victims of drug abuse,” she said.
The Inspector General of Rwanda National Police, Emmanuel Gasana, noted that after drugs and fire arms, human trafficking is the next largest source of income for organized crime worldwide.
In Rwanda, he said, human trafficking has mostly been a result of deception, corruption and ignorance.
Justice Minister Johnson Busingye said between 2011 and 2014, 24 cases of human trafficking were reported to the prosecution, 10 of them were dropped, nine were tried while four people were convicted and five acquitted.
He said the challenges in trying human trafficking cases is dealing with inadequate information since the victim sometimes become part of the story, knowing the trafficking routes, and countries having different stand on the crime.
Busingye suggested the penalties for human trafficking in the country are lenient.
Upon conviction, human tracking attracts a term of imprisonment of seven years to ten years and a fine of 7,257 U.S. dollars or double the fine in Rwanda’s Penal code.
“Statistics should guide us when we are drafting the laws. The gravity of the crime towards the society should be a guiding factor in determining the punishment. If the penal code does not bring about the deterrence of the crime then we should make a review, these are human beings at stake,” the minister said.
Belgium’s young PM sworn in to lead centre-right govt
Belgium’s King Philippe has sworn in a new centre-right government, more than four months after the general election.
It is led by French-speaking liberal Charles Michel, 38, who will be Belgium’s youngest PM since 1841.
The government is the first to include ministers from the separatist New Flemish Alliance (N-VA) party. It has vowed to cut government spending and balance the national budget.
Belgium is notorious for long political deadlocks following elections.
It took 541 days to form the country’s previous, Socialist-led government.
The country is also deeply divided linguistically. Dutch-speaking parties performed well in the elections, but they chose to form a four-party coalition and appoint a French-speaking prime minister.
The N-VA, which campaigns for more autonomy for northern, Dutch-speaking Belgium, came first in the May elections.
Its leader, Bart De Wever, will remain mayor of Antwerp and did not join the government.
As well as a commitment to lower taxes, the new government plans to raise the pension age from 65 to 66 in 2025 and to 67 in 2030.
Outgoing prime minister, French-speaking socialist Elio di Rupo, has vowed to lead the political opposition to the policies.
Cameroonian Official Denies Report Of Release Of Boko Haram Hostages - Politics

Football - International friendlies Tardelli brace sees Brazil triumph in Superclasico
International friendly, National Stadium, Beijing – Brazil 2 (Tardelli 28, 64) Argentina 0
Two maiden international goals from Diego Tardelli proved the difference as Brazil overcame bitter rivals Argentina in the 100th meeting of the two great sides in Beijing.
Tardelli struck midway through each half after Argentina had a legitimate penalty claim turned down before Jefferson saved Lionel Messi’s spot kick at the end of the first half.
Argentina dominated the opening half hour and looked to have justified grounds for a penalty rejected when Miranda sent Aguero sprawling in the box before Brazil took the lead against the run of play. Oscar's hopeful cross was headed into Tardelli's path by Fernandez and the striker rifled his volley past Jefferson.
Having been denied an earlier penalty, Argentina then appeared fortunate to be awarded a second when Danilo seemed to win the ball cleanly off Angel di Maria.
But Messi missed his third spot kick in four games for club and country and another second-half goal from Tardelli sealed the match in Brazil’s favour.
The result means that Brazil now lead the head-to-head record between the sides with 40 victories to Argentina's 36.

Dont Field Atiku, Obasanjo Warns APC. - Politics
There are strong indications that former President
Olusegun Obasanjo may have warned the All
Progressives Congress not to field former Vice-
President Abubakar Atiku as its flagbearer in the
2015 elections.
Obasanjo, during a recent visit by the APC
national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to his
residence in Abeokuta, was said to have warned
the opposition party against fielding an “unclean
vessel” as its presidential candidate in 2015.
An impeccable source, who was at the meeting
but did not want his name mentioned, told
Saturday PUNCH that last week’s visit by Tinubu
to Obasanjo was meant to remind the former
President of the need to support the APC to
realise its ambition of winning next year’s
presidential election.
The source said, “Chief Obasanjo appreciated
Tinubu’s visit to his home, but specifically
warned the APC to shut its door against “unclean
vessel.”
“Chief Obasanjo reiterated his refusal to join the
APC when Tinubu visited him in his Abeokuta
residence, but warned the party to beware of
Atiku.
“The former President appreciated the move by
the APC to find out what he knew about two of
the APC aspirants seeking the party’s presidential
ticket. He was happy that the party consulted him
over whom to pick as its presidential candidate.
The former President gave detailed information on
the APC presidential aspirants to Tinubu.”
But Atiku’s media aide, Garba Shehu, said he was
not aware of such comments by Obasanjo
against the former vice-president.
Shehu, who said that Atiku had consulted
relevant stakeholders on his plan to become
Nigeria’s president next year, said, “You can
quote me; we are not in any way aware of such
comment. What I can say is that the former vice-
president has written a letter to his former boss,
respectfully informing him of his wish to bid for
the APC ticket.”
He also said that Atiku had sent similar letters to
other Nigerians.
“These letters, which were personally signed, had
gone to thousands of other Nigerians, including
politicians, traditional and religious leaders as well
as friendly-diplomatic missions.”
Senate President David Mark and Tinubu had last
Friday held separate closed-door meetings with
Obasanjo. Both Mark and the former Lagos State
governor said the issues discussed at the
meetings held at the Obasanjo’s Hilltop residence
in Abeokuta centred on the state of the nation.
Tinubu had told journalists that he had
discussion with Obasanjo on “some of his former
boys” who would vie for elective positions in the
2015 general elections, especially the Presidency.
He had said, “We are here to pay homage to our
former President and discuss with him because he
has a number of influences in the political sphere.
“We need to talk to find out his thinking about
Nigeria and the future. We need to seek his
observation on some of his former boys who are
running for Presidency in our party.”
Mark had also described Obasanjo as the father
of the nation with a wealth of experience.
The Senate President had told journalists after
the meeting that he came with his team, including
Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan;
the Peoples Democratic Party Women Leader,
Mrs. Josephine Anenih; and Senator Polycarp
Nwite, among others to discuss with the former
President and raise some basic issues that
affected both the party and the nation.
He said, “We discussed issues that will move
Nigeria forward because Chief Obasanjo’s love for
Nigeria is unquantifiable. So, we had a good
discussion with him.”
Saturday PUNCH also learnt that the former
president would support APC in its bid to win
next year’s presidential election.
Party sources said Obasanjo did not need to
defect to the opposition party before he could
support it to win the poll.
The APC National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai
Muhammed, told one of our correspondents on
telephone on Thursday that the recent visit to
Obasanjo by Tinubu was part of efforts to ensure
that the opposition party got the former
President’s support ahead of the poll.
Though the APC spokesperson said that he was
not fully privy to the topic of discussion between
Obasanjo and Tinubu, he said that if the party
leader had gone to visit the former President, it
was about how the former president could help
the opposition party win in the 2015 general
elections.
He said, “I am not fully aware of what they
(Obasanjo and Tinubu) discussed. But of course,
did you expect they would discuss church
matters? Clearly if he went to visit Obasanjo, it
had to be about politics and the party. What else
would you expect them to talk about?
“That would not be the first time the party
chieftains would meet with the former President.
There is no secret about it. We want the party to
win in next year’s elections. That is it.”
When asked whether the former President might
defect to the APC to help the party achieve its
goal, Mohammed said, “Obasanjo does not need
to defect to the APC before he could help the
party.
“The former President needs not declare openly or
defect to our party before he can help us.
Someone went to visit him, he was chased out;
Asiwaju Tinubu went to visit him and he was
entertained. What are you talking about? What
does that tell you?”
Obasanjo had in 2013 embraced the APC when
some of the party’s national leaders and
governors elected on its platform visited him in
Abeokuta.
The APC leaders then sought Obasanjo’s support
for the party’s bid to win the forthcoming
elections.
Among Obasanjo’s visitors during the December
2013 visit were Tinubu, former APC Interim
National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande; former
Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari; former
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu
Masari; former Borno State Governor, Senator Ali
Modu-Sheriff; Senator Osita Isunazor; and
Senator Bukola Saraki.
Tinubu, who hailed Obasanjo’s contributions to
nation-building, had lamented that the country
was divided more than ever.
Tinubu had added that the APC had resolved to
rescue Nigeria and appealed to the former
President to lead the mission.
He had said, “You have come out of tribulation
and held the highest position in this country. We
are here because of your courage. Nobody can
say he has information more than you. You have
surmounted a number of crises. Nigeria is divided
more than before; to realise stable Nigeria, we
want to encourage you to continue to speak the
truth. We are resolved and determined to rescue
Nigeria. We want you as navigator.”
But the Peoples Democratic Party, which
apparently sensed that the APC might finally get
Obasanjo’s full support, on Wednesday, made
entreaties to beg the former President.
Obasanjo, a former Chairman of the party’s Board
of Trustees, had refused to identify with the party
following series of disagreements he had with
President Goodluck Jonathan and the running of
the party.
The former President even as the chairman of BoT
of the party shunned the meetings of the various
organs of the party, including its National
Executive Committee.
But speaking while receiving former Ogun State
Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, who defected
from the Labour Party to the PDP in Abuja on
Wednesday, the National Chairman of the party,
Alhaji Adamu Mu’Azu, begged Obasanjo to return
to the PDP.
Mu’azu, who was reacting to an earlier apology
offered by Daniel, said every member of the party
must beg the former President for forgiveness.
He described Obasanjo as a pragmatic leader,
who he said hailed from a zone he claimed had
produced the best educated people in the country.
Mu’azu said, “I want to join former Ogun State
governor, I want to join my dear elder brother and
indeed all the teeming members here to very
sincerely apologise to our leader, to our baba, my
baba, General, President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo
to forgive us.
“We cannot continue. I know he has been very
prayerful. In the Villa, I know he used to pray
every morning. Very early, 5:30 to 6am, he is
praying.
“And I know he keeps on praying all the time. As
we say in our Lord’s Prayer: ‘Forgive us our sins,
as we forgive those who trespass against us’;
Baba, you have to forgive us. I beg you in the
name of the Almighty God, so that you too can be
forgiven. We are your children. We are making
mistakes, we have made mistakes, we have
apologised.
“We will not agree even if you want to throw the
baby away with the bath water, the baby will not
go without you.
“So, please baba, we apologise. Come and lead
us. Even the President (Goodluck Jonathan) is
waiting for you. Come and lead us. You are our
leader, we appreciate you, we thank you for your
leadership.”

Boko Haram Losing Grip And Territories - Politics
■ Deserter reveals how leadership vacuum,
internal squabble, hunger, desertion by members
made Adamawa military exploit possible
Indications abound that the Nigerian troops are
getting upper hand against the Boko Haram sect,
following the continued noticeable frictions
existing among members of the gang and lack of
clear, respectable chain of command hitherto
existing before the killing of its leader, Abubakar
Shekau, a source told Saturday Sun.
Saturday Sun authoritatively gathered that recent
breakthroughs by the Nigerian troops is also
informed by the demise of a prominent leader of
the insurgents, after the death of Abubakar
Shekau at Konduga in Borno State. It is
suggested that the weakening of the sect also
results from power tussle amongst those who are
jostling to lead the gang. The development, which
our sources said, has led to internecine squabble
even among the rank and file in the Boko Haram
camp.
It will be recalled that, as a result of the friction,
which culminated in the fierce battle within their
ranks and the death of over 30 insurgents in the
process, succession palaver, is also said to have
informed the new development. In the
circumstances, it would seem that things have
begun to fall apart with the terror group.
Coupled with all that is the apparent
disenchantment by those that were forcefully
recruited. For example, there were hundreds that
were recruited in Michika and Madagali localities
of Adamawa State. According to one of them who
deserted the group recently, they were mostly
natives who were used by the insurgents to
identify houses of prominent figures in
government in the two localities and their
environs.
Some of the indigenes, who were rescued from
captivity during an interaction with Saturday Sun,
maintained that the recent military breakthroughs
were made possible because the cohesion that
once existed within the group has begun to
weaken and, therefore, the centre is beginning to
bottom out.
The recruited natives, who claimed that they were
hypnotized by the insurgents toward assisting in
dishing out vital information, took the advantage
of these recent breakthroughs of the troops to
escape to Mubi and Yola, the state capital.
Aliu Dauda, one of those that escaped, relayed his
experience in the camp to Saturday Sun. He said
that many of them that were recruited were did
not join on their volition. According to him, they
hypnotized, using certain liquid substances.
“Most youths in Michika were forcefully recruited
to join the gang, first as subsidiary staff. Failure
to do their bidding attracted lashes or being shot
in the leg or confined in an underground detention
camp.
“We served as informants and any attempt to give
out false information will be punished severely.
The fact remains that we were placed under a
spell, which made it possible for us to obey them.
We discovered that we were doing everything they
told us without complaints.
“I thank God that I survived and now in the midst
of our kinsmen who have helped us to recover
from the after effect of our abduction,” Dauda
enthused.
Adding, he said: “Those that forcefully recruited
us do not have human feelings. While we were in
their midst, we could not resist whatever they told
us because a liquid substance was given to us.”
When asked how he was able to escape, he said
that, “first and foremost, there were disagreement
and disenchantment between the rank and file of
the gang and our supposed leaders. Those of us
that were newly recruited five months ago, had to
escape when it was apparent that Nigerian troops
were having an edge over the Boko Haram sect.
“At the stage we were, we weren’t given arms
and ammunitions but rather our assignments
were to give out information and identify
locations and targets for destruction. We had not
graduated to that stage; those recruited in
Konduga and Gwoza were our seniors in the
business of killing. We that were forcefully
recruited in Gulak, Madagali and Michika, were
considered not mature or trained to handle
weapons or take charge of ammunition.”
Dauda disclosed to Saturday Sun that hunger and
starvation in the camp of the gang immensely
contributed to the breakthroughs recorded by the
Nigerian side. “As a result of hunger and
starvation, the gang allowed the newly recruited
to search everywhere for food. We were given this
assignment because we are familiar with the
localities. We had no choice but to break into
people’s houses who are our kinsmen to get raw
food. Besides, houses of prominent persons in
Michika were taken over by the sect.”
Army recovers more towns, arms and
ammunition
In recent times, Nigerian troops’ successes over
the insurgents have reverberated, especially with
the capture of two armoured tanks belonging to
the sect. Apart from serious casualty figures
recorded by the group, the Nigerian military has
also captured a massive armoury with arms and
ammunitions belonging to the fleeing terrorists.
“The large quantities of weapons recovered in the
raid are still being evacuated from the scene of
the night raid where several terrorists died,”
Major General Chris Olukolade, the defence
spokesman said recently. He added: “Similar
operations took place in coordination with the
troops of Multinational Joint Task Force in the
raids in other camps located on the outskirts of
Duguri, Polkime, Malafatori and other locations
around the fringes of Lake Chad.”
He also revealed that substantial amounts of
“money in different currencies and denominations
were recovered from the camps, while a total of
seven terrorists were captured in the operation.”
The statement also gave an update on the foiled
attack on Giwa Barrack in Maiduguri, Olukolade
had said: “Troops conducting cordon and search
for remnants of the daring terrorists who attacked
Giwa Barracks in Maiduguri, had an encounter
with some of the surviving terrorists in the general
area of Kayamla and Alu Dam on the outskirts of
Maiduguri this morning. More of the terrorists
have been killed and arrested in the ongoing
encounters.
He added that more bodies of fleeing terrorists
had been discovered along the routes of their
escape. Troops’ morale and fighting spirit have
been further boosted by the outcome of the
operations so far, he said, adding that cordon-
and-search as well as patrols and pursuit by air
and land were continuing in the entire mission
area of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states.
Meanwhile, West African leaders have planned to
establish a multi-national force to counter the
Boko Haram Takfiri militants operating in the
region. The decision was taken on Tuesday during
a summit attended by the presidents of Nigeria,
Chad, Niger and Benin and the foreign minister of
Cameroon in Niger’s capital, Niamey. Nigerien
president, Mahamadou Issoufou, reportedly said
after the meeting, that the establishment of
headquarters for the multi-national force will be
“accelerated to make it operational before the end
of November.” Battalions will be deployed to “our
respective borders” in the same time frame,
Issoufou had added.

Too early to crown Chelsea 29 September 2014
Six matches into the BPL season, it seems this season might be a walk in the park for Chelsea.
At least most of the pundits think so and Chelsea’s football seems to suggest they will be very hard to shift from their current position at the top of the table. It might well be that Jose Mourinho could win his first silverware after two barren seasons but I have watched football (especially in England) long enough to believe that it will not be easy.
With Diego Costa in form, Cesc Fabregas pulling the strings delightfully in midfield, Eden Hazard deliciously impudent all over and a truly solid squad of players in almost every position, it might seem foolish to think that Chelsea won't win this league.
Well, last season, the West London side beat both Liverpool and Man City home and away but still finished behind them both. It is a long season and, with a campaign in the Champions League and busy cup schedules in England, freak results usually occur.
Other regular occurrences include injuries to key players. According to Jose Mourinho, Chelsea are currently patching up Diego Costa and wheeling him out for matches. How much longer can they do this? At some point in the season he could break down. When that happens, does anyone think the Blues have another striker in form to take over?
Chelsea's very compact tactics when out of possession have enabled John Terry to look in good shape, especially with the astute positional awareness of Nemanja Matic in front of the centre-backs. I am not buying that.
The former England captain is done and will be most vulnerable if and when Chelsea have to chase a game - the match against Schalke of Germany in the Champions League shows exactly how vulnerable they really are.
Go further back to the home win over Leicester and, in large sections of the match, the newly promoted side exposed their illustrious hosts time and again on the counter but woeful finishing and the excellence of keeper Thibault Courtouis denied them a goal. So, Chelsea are vulnerable.
They are in form though, and proved that with the brushing aside of an obdurate Villa over the weekend
One of those freak results I was talking about has happened already this season, with the champions Man City losing at home to Stoke City. They followed it up with back-to-back draws at Arsenal and at home to Chelsea but, over the weekend, they beat Hull to return to winning ways.
City will be hard to shift when their big guns start firing. At the moment, Yaya Toure is patchy and they have lost Samir Nasri to injury, along with Jovetic, who had started the season brightly.
When in full flow, Man City tend to possess way too much for the opposition. Like Chelsea though, one has the feeling that they might be distracted by the demands of the Champions League.
Last season, Arsenal's title challenge seemed to falter when injuries robbed them of the services of Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey during the business end. One must not forget, though, that since that defeat at Goodison Park to Everton, the Gunners are yet to lose in the league.
They seem to be losing players to injuries earlier this season, which might be a good thing if these players remain fit towards the last few months of the season. After the rather bruising draw at home to Spurs over the weekend, Ramsey and Arteta hobbled off while Jack Wilshere is touch-and-go for the match at Chelsea next weekend. Arsene Wenger's team remain unbeaten but he knows they really should be winning the home matches against Spurs to keep the title in focus.
Arsenal have as good a chance as any to win the title. Their play is still exciting enough but they may well be severely tested if they have any more injuries to their defenders.
Of last season's top four, Liverpool are the ones struggling the most. These struggles by the Merseyside club are the biggest proof that Luis Suarez was almost super human. Brendan Rodgers is one young manager I rate very highly and he has an ability to set his team out with almost always the right tactics. However, the one area he seems deficient in, is probably in his transfer purchases, as evident by the players he has brought in to replace the departed Uruguayan.
The return of Daniel Sturridge from injury to partner Mario Balotelli should be able to give the team a lift and get them to performing somewhere on the level they so thrillingly did last season.
Injuries, suspensions, loss of form, atrocious refereeing decisions and the cup demands are some of the factors that affect a long season. After only six matches, there is still a very long way to go before the finish line appears.
This coming weekend I shall be at Old Trafford to watch Louis van Gaal's expensively assembled Manchester United team entertain Everton. Last season, as part of the crimes committed by David Moyes, they lost twice to Everton without scoring. Somehow, it is hard to see Everton not conceding at Old Trafford this season.
So please join me on twitter @CalvinEmeka and I will give updates during the match and all through the weekend. I know you will be tuned to all the SuperSport channels for the matches anyway. Please leave your comments here as they are very much appreciated.
No need to panic yet
A bolt from the blue. That’s how media outlets all over the world are describing Phil Jagielka’s last-minute strike at Anfield, which ensured that Both Everton and Liverpool walked away from their match with a point.
One thing that must be said (even as a Liverpool fan) is, what a goal! That strike from Jagielka was phenomenal. The Everton captain caught the ball so sweetly with the outside of his boot. As soon as he hit it, everyone knew it was going in.
Liverpool didn't deserve to draw that match. We should have taken all three points but that is football. You can be on “cloud nine” and be brought back to earth with a thud just moments later.
Saturday’s derby wasn't really what I expected. Normally in derby games, form goes out of the window. However, this one was a boring affair. Yes, there were some glimpses of brilliance, like Gerrard’s goal or Jagielka’s, but most of the match was dull.
A few questions have sprung up since Saturday and I need to chat about them here:
Is Balotelli capable of filling the Luis Suarez gap up front?
Stepping into the shoes of someone like Luis Suarez is a tough task for any footballer. Suarez was fantastic last season, hammering in 31 goals. We all knew his absence would cause Liverpool to struggle. Balotelli, in his own right, is a fantastic footballer, though he isn't in the Luis Suarez mould.
I remember last season. Luis would be all over the pitch and, if he lost the ball, he would do his utmost to win it back. Balotelli seems to be quite lazy on the pitch and his body language doesn't seem right. Maybe it’s because of the way Brendan is playing him up front as a lone striker.
I think, to get the best out of Balotelli, Brendan Rodgers needs to change his tactics. His current formation, with Sterling and Couthino on the wings and Balotelli in the middle, isn't giving us much joy. I’m sure the return of Daniel Sturridge will help Balotelli immensely and I hope we get to see Sturridge sooner rather than later.
Is our defence good enough?
I have said it time and time again this season, and the simple answer is NO. Or should I say, not at the moment.
One thing we are all (yes, including me) quick to forget, is that three out of four players are new. Rodgers brought in wing-backs Manquillo and Moreno as well as centre-back Dejan Lovren this summer and it will take some time for them to gel.
Manquillo and Moreno have hit the ground galloping and have been two of our best new signings so far. Their pace and crossing ability has been something we have been missing.
Meanwhile, Lovren was brought in to be a Jamie Carragher sort of figure. However, that hasn't panned out yet. He needs to be more dynamic and take on the responsibility of marshalling his defenders.
We clearly saw the kind of player he is capable of being last season at Southampton but the pressure of donning the famous red shirt seems to be getting to him. Once he can get his head around this, he will improve.
I also feel that Mignolet needs to have someone putting the pressure on him. I really wish we didn't sell Pepe Reina. I feel that teams need to have two world-class keepers in the side. Hopefully the rumours about Victor Valdes are true and we will see him at Anfield very soon.
Can we still challenge this season?
With only six games played and three points off fourth place, I don’t think we need to start panicking just yet. September has been an awful month for us and I’m glad to see the back of it. We have some easier ties coming up in the Premier League, with the likes of West Brom, QPR, Hull and Newcastle up next.
At the beginning of the season, I never thought that we could repeat last season’s heroics, or even go one better and win the league. I think we are still one or two seasons away from that. Our main aim this term is to at least win some silverware and ensure that we are in the Champions League next season.
Or else we may go down the Leeds United route.
This Wednesday we are away in Switzerland to face FC Basle in a match you can catch LIVE on your world of Champions. What do you think the score will be? Send me a tweet @JunaV or comment below.
I’ve never rated Robbie Savage as a pundit but I must say that his recent observation around the freedom Louis van Gaal has been given at Manchester United is spot on.
The former Blackburn and Derby County midfielder pointed out that, after having spent an excess of £150 million in marquee signings this summer, Van Gaal’s team have been anything but spectacular. In fact, he compares the current team to a beautiful house that has the nicest roof on the street but has blown out windows on the ground floor.
United’s results and points tally after five games are the worst in the team’s history in the Barclays Premier League. So it is no surprise that fans of the club are scratching their heads in amazement, especially after a pre-season where the team went unbeaten against top-level opposition.
Days before the opening game of the season, Van Gaal strutted the terraces of Carrington and had a room full of delighted journalists eating from the palm of his hands. It was a typical Van Gaal conference, one that the journalists had been exposed to only a few weeks before in Brazil, where he guided the Dutch national team to a third-place finish.
The Swans were the visitors to Old Trafford in what was a reverse fixture from the previous season. Armed with a new 3-5-2 formation that had worked extremely well in pre-season, you fancied United to walk away with all three points.
Swansea beat them convincingly and, in effect, exposed cracks that had been papered over in pre-season. United just did not have the personnel in defence to execute a system Van Gaal favoured. Smalling and Jones were made to look like bartenders who had one too many drinks before their shifts started. Long after Gary Monk and his team had departed the previously hallowed grounds of Old Trafford, fans sat back in bewilderment.
A subsequent loss to MK Dons in the Capital One Cup and two draws against Sunderland and Burnley set the alarm bells ringing, but it was the 5-3 loss to newly promoted Leicester City that got tongues wagging.
In fairness to Van Gaal, United had looked in control before some howlers by Mark Clattenburg changed the complexion of the game. United’s defence capitulated in dramatic fashion and, suddenly, the rousing speeches of only a few months ago began to give way to indignant complaints.
The 3-5-2 formation has since been jettisoned in favour of a more predictable four-man defence that looked better than it really was against a muzzled QPR team. Unfortunately for Van Gaal, his defenders are falling away to injuries like leaves from a tree.
Change was required and the directors knew that Van Gaal was one of a few available coaches with the conviction to carry it out. Vidic, Ferdinand and Evra were ultimately consigned to fresh pastures and, in one fell swoop, United lost three decades of experience in the back line.
So why did a manager with the technical nous of Van Gaal not adequately replace them? Why was a midfielder in the mould of Nigel de Jong (who did such an admirable job for Van Gaal in the recently concluded World Cup) or Alex Song (who was being offered to everyone by Barcelona) not snapped up?
While Daley Blind looks a potentially good player and a calmer influence in midfield, he hasn’t quite looked like an upgrade of the injured Michael Carrick and seems a bit lightweight against bigger and better opposition.
Van Gaal is conceited, stubborn and crass, if nothing else, and he has continued to insist that he will not be forced into panic buying a defender during the January transfer window. Instead, Paddy McNair and Tom Thorpe have been drafted to the first team from the reserves, with the former giving a good account of himself in a highly charged encounter against West Ham this past weekend, but is he the answer to United’s problems at the back?
By the time Everton visit Old Trafford this weekend, United might have either Johnny Evans or Chris Smalling back, if not both. After admitting earlier this week that he’s made too many changes and given the players too many instructions too soon, will Van Gaal revert to his favoured three-in-defence or continue with the much more reliable 4-4-2?
What will it mean about his philosophy if he decides to continue with the latter?
Don't bet against Barcelona winning 'big
Ten games, nine goals and fives assists, that's the blistering statistics that Lionel Messi has kicked off this 2014/2015 season with for Barcelona.
Barcelona went on a nine-game run without conceding a goal at the highest level of World Football prior to this mid-week Champions League clash against Paris St Germain of France. For a team that is built around offensive play and high ball possession this is quite remarkable and worth applauding.
The 3-2 loss to Paris St Germain was not only their first in 10 games but they conceded also their first goals where rivals like Real Madrid have conceded nine goals in the same number of games.
Luis Enrique (ex-Barcelona player and youth coach) is the new man at the helm of affairs at the Nou Camp and we are seeing some flashes of the old under Pep Guardiola, just as we are witnessing some drastic changes in this Barcelona set-up.
"Tiki taka" has not been abandoned as many thought, but has been adapted by reduction to suit the current situation: there is less short passing and total domination of the opponent in ball possession to the point of 70% in some cases as was the case in the past is not happening. However, we are rather seeing a variation in playing style.
The team under Enrique has welcomed several new players from the youth academy of the 'La Masia' (Barcelona's football school) and these new faces in the fold are quite refreshing to watch as they not only show hunger but creativity in abundance.
"Veterans of the club like Xavi Hernandez have become familiar faces on the substitute’s bench as the Barcelona team welcomes into its midfield, Croatia's World Cup 2014 revelation, Ivan Rakitic from Seville.
Rakitic brings less passing and creativity in comparison to Xavi or Iniesta into the midfield but is younger and stronger defensively in aggression.
This Barcelona is a team to watch and I wouldn't advise you to bet against them winning "big" this season, Iniesta is the new captain and is still impressive on the ball.
Barcelona are yet to welcome fully into the starting line up Uruguayan star Luis Suarez (still serving his several months ban for biting Italian Giorgio Chiellini at the summer World Cup in Brazil.
With Neymar Jr looking fresher and better than last season at this initial stage and legend Lionel Messi looking near his best with not only the above stated statistics (but now has reached the 400 goals mark for Barcelona!) and the eventual addition of Suarez who never stops chasing the ball and is a potent danger upfront to any defence in the world, I feel this Barcelona attack will more than wreck havoc on their rivals.
One striking difference from the 'vintage' Barcelona under Pep Guardiola one notices is the relatively loosened "pressing" football when not in possession.
The time lapse from ball loss to recovery is longer now and this could hinder their dominance against top and physical teams in the mould of the 'new' Chelsea for example.
After a World Cup in which most of their stars have effectively participated, this is to be expected though.
Defensively Barcelona are looking fragile and with Pique on and off, coupled with the hyper offensive-minded fullbacks in Jodi Alba and Dani Alves, against teams who can absorb the attacks and high ball possession coupled with chasing of it that Barcelona will throw at them and break out behind these two fullbacks, this Barcelona team could struggle.
Funny enough, that was the collective strategy applied by Paris St Germain at the mid-week Champions League encounter. The relative disadvantage in size of the Barcelona players that is imposed on them by their playing style makes them vulnerable in set-pieces and cost them two goals against PSG.
All in all though this Barcelona side is champion material. They are better than last season and though they shed off Cesc Fabregas and Alexis Sanchez, they more than compensated for it by the above named acquisitions.
If they find a way to physically stay fresh and fit all through the best parts of the season they will win 'big'.

Riot In Kirikiri Medium Prison - Politics
● It was a riot and no one escaped
● Inmates accuse Deputy Controller of
highhandedness, insists that there was a jail
break
There was a rampage at the Kirikiri Meduim
Security , Lagos yesterday as some inmates who
started a riot allegedly escaped before they could
be contained.
As at the time Saturday Sun correspondents
visited the area, heavily armed security officers
comprising of Prison guards ,Army , Navy and
Police personnel were seen guarding the area and
restricting movement of people in and outside the
barracks were Kirikiri Maximum Prison is located.
The fierce looking military men cordoned off all
the entry and exit routes leading to the prison.
Civilians and vehicles were not allowed access
into the premises except those who have proof
that they are resident in the barracks. Meanwhile
every other vehicle that were exiting the barracks
where thoroughly searched.
Shop owners and passerby who were forced to
seek for alternative routes told Saturday Sun that
they learnt that there was a jail break.
“ This is not the route that the inmates take
when they are escaping because of the heavy
security presence around the area leading to the
prison. You also have a police station facing the
prison directly, and this is why you hardly see
them passing through the main gates. Escapee
inmates go through the bush behind the prison, I
guess that is where the search team should
concentrate their efforts..
Another eyewitness who said that they were
alarmed when they noticed the high influx of
security personnel in the area said: “ Today is a
bad day because I know that for few days
coming, there will be heavy security presence in
this area.Innocent passerby will be harassed by
some overzealous security offficers.”
On what led to the jail break, Saturday Sun
gathered that the inmates were fed up with what
they described as highhandedness on the part of
the new Deputy Controller at the Maximum
Security Prison, DCP Kayode Odeyemi. They
alleged that he stripped the inmates of all the
privileges given to them by former controllers.
An inmate who spoke to Saturday Sun explained
that before Odeyemi’s arrival, inmates were
allowed to use their own generator sets, cook
their food , make use of mobile phones and other
privileges to make their stay in the prison
comfortable but all these were withdrawn when
Odeyemi resumed.
Okonjo-Iweala Bags African Finance Minister Of The Year Award - Business
Washington – The Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi
Okonjo-Iweala, on Friday bagged the African
Finance Minister of the year award for her
outstanding performance as a finance minister.
The award was presented to her by the African
Investor Magazine on the sideline of the ongoing
annual meetings of the World Bank and the
International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington
DC.
She thanked the organisers for the award and
described it as an absolute honour and
auspicious.
She called on all investors in Africa to join the
fight against the deadly Ebola virus disease that
is ravaging some countries in West Africa.
“What is happening in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra-
Leone and the success we had in Nigeria and
Senegal in containing this virus should not be
allowed to set Africa back.
“You as private sector and friends of Africa need
to send the message that we should not be so
afraid of Ebola that we stigmatise the whole
continent.
“I think that it is only with your own leadership,
as African investors, that the rest of the world
can see which way they should pass. So, I am
really urging you to be ambassadors to the
continent,” she said.
Okonjo-Iweala said that in spite of the challenges
facing the continent, African leaders should
sustain the successes recorded in the past.
These challenges, she said, include infrastructure,
governance, poor education system, employment,
corruption, among others.
“We are not shying away from these challenges
but the turning point now is that we are in the
continent where we have the political will and
confidence to tackle these challenges.
“I think that we as Africans must always take the
lead because if we don’t solve our problems,
nobody can do it for us.”
Okonjo-Iweala called for continuous partnership
with the private sector, donor agencies and non-
governmental organisations. (NAN)

Jonathan Flags-off First Phase Of The $1bn Azura-Edo Greenfield Power Plant - Business
President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday flagged-
off the first phase of the $1 billion Azura-Edo
power plant, the first fully privately financed
independent power plant (IPP) in the country,
located in Ihovbor/Orior Odemwende communities
of Edo State.
He called on communities around the country
who are hosts to several federal, state and
private sector projects to play their roles as there
is development in partnership.
This is even as he said the Federal Government
will continue to ensure that the growth of the
electricity industry becomes self-sustaining and
sustainable.
Speaking at the groundbreaking of the Azura-Edo
independent power plant in Edo State, the
president said, “I want to use this opportunity to
call on all the local communities around the
country who are hosts to several federal, state
and even private sector projects, that have been
hindered by community disruptions, to recognise
that in partnership there is development and so,
everyone must play their roles”.
He added, “My administration is fully committed
to continuously improving the framework and
enabling environment based on sound policy
formulation, access to long-term low interest
finance, and transparent and consistent
regulatory guidelines”.
The first phase of the Azura-Edo IPP is a 450
megawatts greenfield, open cycle gas turbine
power station, with a total capital cost of $735
million. It represents the first phase of a 1,500
megawatts power plant facility.
It is the first fully financed private sector power
plant project. It is also the first power generation
project to receive the World Bank Partial Risk
Guarantee and Multilateral Investment Guarantee
Agency (MIGA) support.
The IPP project, a 450-megawatt of new
generation capacity, which is expected to be
completed by early 2017, has attracted almost a
billion dollars, mainly in foreign direct investment,
into the power sector, comprised of $700 million
in construction of the power plant, and $300
million in associated gas supply infrastructure.
The president said he was greatly encouraged at
the progress made so far towards reforming the
power sector, since the launch of the road map
on power sector reform back on August 26, 2010.
He said the flag-off of the project is the first
signal from the global financial industry that the
years of work that the Federal Government has
dedicated to the reform of the power sector, in
order to attract private sector developers and
financing, is finally yielding results.
According to President Jonathan, the Azura
project demonstrates without a doubt, that “we
have laid a strong foundation on which we are
building a sound and sustainable electricity
industry, with great expectations for robust
growth in the sector. However, success in any
endeavour does not happen by accident, but is
facilitated by sound decisions, conscious effort,
and immense persistence”.
He further said government is committed to
irreversibly repositioning the Nigerian power
sector as a pivot for the attainment of the
nation’s developmental targets.
“We are also maintaining our policy push for
increased diversification of our energy, expanding
investments in large hydro power projects
through public-private partnerships, and the
provision of necessary support to accelerate the
exploitation of our coal resources”, he said.

Bayelsa State New Governor's Office To Cost 33.8 Billion Naira (205 Million USD) - Properties

the country!!!
Following the collapse and the subsequent
demolition of the Bayelsa State governor’s office,
the state government has disclosed that the new
office project under construction would gulp about
N33.8 billion.
The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure,
Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, disclosed this to
journalists during his inspection of the ongoing
projects executed by the Governor Seriake
Dickson administration.
Ewhrudjakpo said the office complex, when
completed, was expected to be the best not only
in the country but in the West Africa sub-region.
He stressed that the project would be equipped
with the latest state-of-the-art facility.
“The contract sum for the new governor’s office is
N33.8 billion As you saw the work done at the
site, so far, you will know that the sum is worth
the while,” he said.
Ewhrudjakpo expressed optimism that the
governor would celebrate this year’s Christmas in
the new office.
He said about 50-60 per cent of the contract sum
had been sunk into the project so far and that
had brought it to near completion.
The commissioner enumerated some of the
challenges in erecting the building to include
sand-filling of the site to two feet above the
ground before the commencement of construction
work.
“If you ask me how much we have sunk into it, I
won’t be able to tell you. But I can say that
about 50-60 per cent of the contract sum has so
far gone into it and that’s why the work is at the
stage it is.
“When we got there, you saw that they were
doing the finishings, fixing electrical and plumbing
fittings. Inside the executive chambers, you saw
that the air conditioners are already there.
“I can tell you that as soon as we give them (A
and K Construction Limited) some additional
money, which we have promised to do in the next
one or two weeks, the job would have gone very
far.
“We are targeting December. We are thinking that
his excellency will celebrate the Christmas in his
new office all things being equal,” the
commissioner said.

FCON Qualifier : Sudan Vs Nigeria On 11th October, 2014 - Sports
The super eagles will look to get all 3 points under difficult conditions in omdurman, Sudan.
It's the 2nd round of qualifiers for Morocco 2015
The Eagles will be without Stoke City forward Victor
Moses, who has suffered a recurrence of a thigh problem
at his English Premier League club, and Ukraine-based
winger Babatunde Michael, who is nursing a knee injury.
Questions rather than praise have greeted Keshi’s
invitation for several uncapped players including China-
based striker Aaron Samuel and Reading midfielder Hope
Akpan.
However, skipper Vincent Enyeama has rejoined the squad
after he stayed away to attend to what team officials said
were “pressing personal problems”.
Star-studded Nigeria will also have to cope with boiling
temperatures and a late switch for the game to be played
on an artificial pitch in Sudan.
“Personally, I prefer playing on a natural grass pitch, but
we just have to adjust, be smarter and work on our timing
when we play on astro turf and we will be okay,” said
Monaco defender Elderson Echiejile, who will be visiting
Sudan for the first time.
“And as for the weather, we are first and foremost
Nigerians and born in Africa and so we should also be able
to cope on the day.”
Middlesbrough defender Kenneth Omeruo said there will
be no margin for error against Sudan in both games
"We are aware of the task ahead and so we have resolved
to work hard to pick the available 12 points in our
remaining qualifiers,” said Omeruo
"The response of the players from the first day of training
speaks loud of our intention ahead of the games. All we
ask of Nigerians is their support.
“We also know there are no minnows anymore in African
football."
Both countries have clashed 11 times and Nigeria have
won six of these meetings, drawn four times and lost once
to the Sudanese.
The only Nigeria loss to Sudan was in was in 1963, when
they fell 4-0 in a 1964 Nations Cup qualifier, while the last
meeting was in a friendly in 2008 which Nigeria won 2-0.
Nigeria ran away 4-0 winners on their last visit to Sudan in
a 2002 World Cup qualifier 13 years ago with Yakubu

Marussia to race one car out of respect for Bianchi
Marussia will race with only one car in Sunday's Russian Formula One Grand Prix out of respect for injured French driver Jules Bianchi, the team said on Friday.
Bianchi remains in a critical but stable condition in a Japanese hospital after he crashed into a recovery tractor at Suzuka during last Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix.
"The team have written to the stewards of the meeting to inform them that they have withdrawn their second car," Marussia said in a statement.

Enugu Onitsha Expressway: A Reflection Of A People’s Nightmare - Politics
One of the “dividends of democracy” used in
measuring the success of an administration and
perhaps the connectivity between a people and
the government is infrastructure development.
Electricity, Roads, Markets, etc are some “gifts”
which most government in a democratic
dispensation extend to the people that supported
and queued under the elements to cast their vote
for them. In most cases, those who did not
support the winning team are usually denied of
such “favour.”
Following the reoccurring road mishaps recorded
in a fraction of Enugu–Onitsha road located in
Umunya in Oyi local government of Anambra
state, road users have called for speedy
construction of the road by government.
The Anambra state government had announced
plans on January 1, to embark on the
construction of the Amawbia-Amansea portion of
the road. Though at the moment, the road is still
far from being done. In like manner, the state
government had seen to the completion of the
road beginning from the Niger Bridge up till the
Nkpor new parts. But beyond there is a painful
picture of rejection and abandonment.
It was gathered that road accidents recorded on
the Umunya portion of the ever-busy road have
within the past five years that the reconstruction
began, claimed dozens of lives and destroyed
goods worth millions of naira. Some of the road
users also claimed that the spot has also created
an avenue for armed robbers to swoop on
motorists.
Other portions of the 104km stretch are not better
off. Awkuzu junction, right in front of the Special
Anti Robbery Squad of the Anambra State Police
Command has been reduced to a gully as one
part of the dual carriage way has be washed off
by erosion and become a dump site for
abandoned vehicles.
While on this story, we gathered that between
Ugwuoba and Obinofia Ndi Uno which will take
about ten minutes in 1994 now take anything
more than forty-five minutes due to the state of
the road.
Further down to 9th Mile, Ngwo, the suffering a
regular road user is subjected to becomes near
unbearable. Economic activities which began to
grow around here in the early 90s, have
disappeared. Highway robbery is now the order.
The Police have easy excuse that the condition of
the road has made it extremely difficult for quick
response in times of emergency.
Overall, the communities along this road that
once derived pride and joy from it now live in
neglect and constant doubt of what they did
wrong. To my mind, they did nothing wrong that
being born to a place that should in the view of
those that have occupied the highest office in the
land be annihilated.
Soon, elective office seekers will begin to queue at
the doorstep of the people. As a matter of fact,
they will not visit the Oji River junction where a
stop over to buy Okpa, my favorite delicacy has
become a huge challenge because the road has
really gone bad. They will climb the rostrum set in
Enugu, Onitsha or Awka and promise again that if
voted, they will roll in the bulldozers and all high-
tech construction equipment the next minute and
turn the rejection of the people into paradise.
In 2011, Anambra and Enugu gave the PDP and
Pres. Goodluck Jonathan over 95% of total votes
cast in the states during the election. In addition
to that, some key officers of this administration
who had put in their very best sometime at a
huge cost are from these two states.
Fidelia Njeze, from Enugu moved from the
Ministry of Aviation to Special Advice on MDGs.
She was replaced by Anambra born Stella Oduah
who brought a new face to all the airports across
the country. Diezani Allison Madueke who had ran
the Petroleum ministry for years is a wife to a
proud son of Enugu State. Deputy President of the
Senate, Ike Ekweremadu is from Enugu State.
Most recently, Osita Chidoka was made a minister
but before then, he was incharge of the Federal
Road Safety Commission.
Meanwhile, the best the people of these states
have gotten is promises and promises. The
question now are; when will the fulfillment come?
When will those who stood for this government
even when it was much of a risk so to do be
remembered? When will the people enjoy the
much exalted dividends of democracy? Are there
other things expected of the people beyond
supporting the government even when events
around them demand otherwise? Feel free to
provide answers to the questions if you have.

Lagos Targets 25% Food Production By 2018 - Agriculture
As part of efforts to ensure food security, Lagos
State government, yesterday, said its target was
to meet 25 percent of food production in the state
by 2018.
This came as the state government concluded
plans to construct a Metropolitan Park at Ajetutun
in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of the state.
Commissioner for Agriculture and Cooperatives,
Prince Gbolahan Lawal, who disclosed this while
briefing newsmen on the activities slated for this
year’s World Food Day at Alausa, Ikeja, said the
decision to set the 25 percent target was to
ensure that the state’s teeming population did
not at any time experience food scarcity.
Lawal added that apart from the acquisition of
land from Osun, Oyo and Ogun states and Federal
Capital Territory, Abuja, respectively, for farming
purposes, the state was also embarking on
several programmes and projects targeted at
boosting food production in the state.
He said: “For fish production, in 2010, we were
able to produce 109,000 metric tonnes. At the end
of December 2013, we are at 159,000 metric
tonne.”
He added that demand for rice was huge, and
Nigeria will benefit a lot if only the players in the
private sector partner with the state government
to boost rice production.

Rivers PDP Rivals Exchange Blows In Abuja - Politics
There was pandemonium at the National
Campaign Office of the Peoples Democratic Party,
Maitama, Abuja on Thursday as politicians
suspected to be loyalists of the Minister of State
for Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike, beat his
suspected opponents.
Wike is among those aspiring to be the
governorship candidate of the party in Rivers
State in 2015.
The thugs, who were in their tens, used
dangerous weapons, such as stick, bottles and
stones to scare away members of the party from
the state from gaining entrance into the building,
where members of the National Integration
Committee, South-South zone, were meeting.
The meeting was aimed at settling grievances
among members of the ruling party in the zone
and Thursday was allotted to hear the grievances
of those aggrieved in Rivers State.
But only Wike and his supporters were allowed to
enter the venue of the meeting.
Many opponents of the minister, who came to
present petitions to the Senator Iya Abubakar-led
committee were beaten up by the thugs.
Those beaten included a legal practitioner, Mr.
Tabotamuno Dick; a former Commissioner for
Water Resources under former Governor Peter
Odili, Mr. Lolo Ibieneye; Prof. Israel Owate, Dr.
Sowaribi Tolofari, Mr. Sara Egbe and Chief
Bekinbo Sobrekon.
Some journalists were also harassed while others
had either their cameras damaged or their tape
recorders seized.
Dick, who is a legal adviser to the Network for
Defence of Democracy and Good Governance,
suffered an injury near his left eye as a result of
the beating.
While the thugs were beating him, policemen
attached to the venue of the meeting refused to
intervene, as one of them said they were
handicapped because of the personalities
involved.
However, the policemen joined the thugs to chase
away rival politicians who were said not to be
members of Wike’s Grassroots Democratic
Initiatives.
Dick, who spoke with our correspondent after the
incident, said, “I came to defend the petition we
sent to the committee, but see what happened
here today.
“I have been beaten by thugs and these thugs
were joined by the policemen attached to
someone who wants to be a governor of my
state. We shall wait to see.”
Ibineneye also said that he was shoved and
beaten, but warned that the PDP in the state
would soon explode, adding that what happened
in Abuja would have been a child’s play if the
meeting had held in the state.
He said that out of 22 people who brought
petitions to the committee, only four people were
allowed inside.
Another aggrieved member, who was also
harassed and sent out through the gate of the
building, Sarigbe insisted that there was no way
another Ikwerre person would succeed the current
governor of the state, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi.
Sarigbe, who is from Aku Local Government Area
of the state, said, “They are violating the party’s
constitution in the state because the party
recognises zoning of offices in the state and
everywhere.
“I’m a foundation member of the party in the
state. These people went through the back door
and brought a two-man executive. Since these
two men came, they have been violating the
party’s constitution. The party should listen to us
or the party would fail in the state.”
Wike, after the meeting, insisted that there was
peace in the state PDP.
“There is peace in the party in the state,” he said
in a brief interview after the meeting.
Some of the protesters later went to the national
headquarters of the party, where they were
addressed by the party’s National Publicity
Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh.
While addressing them, Metuh assured them that
the party leadership would not allow the
imposition of candidates on members in any state
of the federation.
The PDP spokesman maintained that the party
members would be given the opportunity to elect
and nominate aspirants of their choice who would
eventually become the party’s candidate for
elections in 2015.

Kwakwanso blasts Jonathan for seized $15m
Governor Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso of Kano State
has accused President Goodluck Jonathan-led
Federal Government of not being sincere over its
defence of the seized $9.3m and another $5.7m
by the South African government.
He said the seized money by the South African
government under the guise of procuring arms
and ammunition to fight insurgency, contravened
established rules and guidelines.
The governor said it was a clear violation of the
due process in the procurement.
Kwakwanso spoke in Ado-Ekiti on Thursday after
the public presentation of two laws-Ekiti
Magistrate Court Law 2014 and Administration
of Criminal Justice 2014-by his counterpart from
Lagos, Raji Fashola (SAN).
Fashola, who described laws and
constitutionality as the bedrock of any nation,
said the application of the Cremation and Public
Health Laws gave the state a breakthrough in its
fight against the Ebola Virus Disease that broke
out in the country recently.
Kwakwanso, who had earlier inaugurated the Ire
Burnt Brick Industry revamped by Governor
Kayode Fayemi, said Nigerians must rise up to
protect judiciary for the sustenance of the
country’s democracy.
The governor said, “As a former Minister of
Defence, I am very conversant with the way and
manner, and the due process that is required to
procure any arms, ammunition or equipment,
there are rules and guidelines. Arms and
ammunition are not rice and beans that you can
just go to the market and purchase.
“Many of us were concerned when the
information filtered in. In fact, we didn’t believe
it initially, but along the line, based on the
defence of what happened, we realized that it
was a bitter truth that such a thing happened:
that money of that magnitude in an aircraft flown
to another nation, I think so many things have
gone wrong. I think it is high time for the Federal
Government to sit up to its responsibilities to
ensure that things are being done correctly.
“Yes, we need arms and ammunition; yes, we
need security in this country, but even under that
circumstance, there are rules and guidelines that
must be respected.
“While we are trying to tackle insurgency, we
must follow the due process. Even in the
operation there are rules of engagement; they
are very important to protect the lives and
properties of innocent people.”
Kwakwanso wondered why it took the Federal
Government three weeks to accept that over 200
schoolgirls were abducted by Boko Haram in
Chibok.
He said so many things were wrong under the
administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.
“That is why we are confident that by 2015 the
APC will take over because all that we have seen
in insecurity, unemployment, education…There
are so many schools closed down in the North.
Our children cannot go to school because some
are being stolen,” he lamented.

information filtered in.

Jonathan's Name Removed From African Richest President's List - Politics
Following the rebuttal of Nigeria President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan as the sixth richest African president, RichestLifestyle.com has removed the name of President Jonathan from the controversial list.
No reason was given on the website for the removal but it may not be unconnected to threat by the Presidency to seek legal action against the publication.
It will be recalled that presidential spokeperson, Rueben Abati had earlier issued a statement describing the publication as ‘another attempt to unjustifiably portray the President as a corrupt leader and incite public disaffection against him.’.
The statement reads, The Presidency condemns the totally unwarranted inclusion of President Jonathan in the publication titled "Africa’s Richest Presidents 2014” as another attempt to unjustifiably portray the President as a corrupt leader and incite public disaffection against him.
We categorically assert that there is no factual basis for ranking President Jonathan as the sixth richest African Head of State with a net worth of about $100 Million U.S. Dollars. As is well known, President Jonathan has never been a businessman or entrepreneur, but a life-long public servant.
The President has held public office since 1999 and has regularly declared his assets as required by Nigerian laws. He has had no personal income since 1999 other than his official remuneration as deputy governor, governor, vice president, acting president and president which are matters of public record.
There has been no significant variation in the totality of his personal assets as contained in his last declaration to the Nigerian Code of Conduct Bureau in 2011 which, as can be verified, was a very, very far cry from the $100 million figure now being bandied about by Richest Lifestyle.com and other irresponsible, copy-cat publications.
The clear and unacceptable imputation of the claim that President Jonathan is now worth about $100 Million is that the President has corruptly enriched himself while in office which is certainly not the case. We therefore demand a retraction and an unreserved apology from Richest Lifestyle.com and all those who have reproduced the offensive article. Otherwise, they should be prepared to substantiate their libelous claims against the President in courts of law within and outside Nigeria.

Adamawa: Ngilari Thanks Adamawa State Assembly For Impeaching Nyako - Politics
The newly-instated governor of Adamawa state, Bala Ngilari, has praised state lawmakers for impeaching his former boss, ex-Governor Murtala Nyako, eventually paving the way for him to be governor.
Mr. Ngilari said Thursday that the legislators were merely doing their work.
Mr. Ngilari’s comments came a day after a court ordered that he be sworn in as governor to replace Umar Fintiri, who was the acting governor.
Mr. Fintiri took charge after Mr. Nyako’s ouster in July.
The new governor, Mr. Ngilari, was the deputy under Mr. Nyako. He was also booted out of office until the court order Wednesday.
Messrs Nyako and Ngilari remained close although they belonged to different political parties.
In his reaction to the court ruling Wednesday, Mr. Nyako congratulated his former deputy and said he believed the court would eventually reinstate him as governor of the northeast state.
But as he officially took charge Thursday, with a visit to the state office of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Mr. Ngilari expressed gratitude to members of the State House of Assembly for performing their “legislative duties” by removing his former boss from office.
The governor said he found no fault in the removal of Mr. Nyako from office because the lawmakers were simply doing their duties.
“Let me take this opportunity to thank most especially the Adamawa House of Assembly who performed their legislative duties that led to the removal of my former boss and by the divine arrangement of God, I am the new governor of Adamawa state,” he said.
“I pray that those I offended should forgive me and I also forgive those who offended me. Therefore we must now work together as a family, l can’t claim to be an island and I need your advice to forge the state ahead,” he said.
In his reaction, the state PDP chairman, Joel Madaki, said he was not favourably disposed to Mr. Ngilari before now, but said when God says yes, no one can say no.
He said the governor’s emergence was an act of God.
He said the state PDP must abide by every bit of the constitution of Nigeria as it has now confirmed Mr. Ngilari as the governor of Adamawa state.
“This is your house, PDP is one party but uses different baton to execute their duties. The leadership of the PDP is fully on ground for you. Talk to us,” he said.
Responding on behalf the state assembly members, Salisu Kabilo, representing Verre state Constituency, noted that the lawmakers will be loyal to the new governor and also called on the people of the state to support the new administration

UPDATE: NAF Bombing Boko Haram's Main Base In NE Now - Politics
Dozens of militants were reportedly killed when Nigerian fighter jets on Thursday afternoon bombed a major Boko Haram base near Lake Chad, eyewitnesses have said.
“Air force fighter jets are currently hitting Wulgo village, which is on the banks of Lake Chad. The strategy is to flush them from the area,” a military officer privy to the operation told Anadolu Agency on condition of anonymity.
“The militants were found attacking nearby towns and settlements from Wulgo, where they have a fortress,” he said.
Saidu Batagarawa, a Fulani herdsman in the area, said the military had warned local residents ahead of the aerial operation.
“Boko Haram had long stationed themselves in Wulgo and other villages near Fotokol in neighboring Cameroon,” Batagarawa, who spoke in the local Fulfude dialect, told AA by phone.
“It appears to be their launch base, but the soldiers are now smoking them out,” he added.
Batagarawa suggested that up to 45 insurgents had been killed in the bombardments.
“They are trying to escape. We are aware that they have a tunnel through which they escape,” he said. “But we exposed this to the troops long ago.”
Militants are known to launch attacks from border communities and then escape through waterways in the area – a strategy that is now being thwarted by deepening regional cooperation between Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon and Niger.
Following a meeting in Nigerien capital Niamey on Tuesday, the leaders of Niger, Nigeria, Chad, Benin and Cameroon agreed to form a “joint force” to combat Boko Haram.
In May, the five countries agreed to deploy a joint force composed of some 700 troops as part of a wider strategy for combating the militant group.
Boko Haram, which means “Western education is forbidden” in Nigeria’s local Hausa language, first emerged in the early 2000s preaching against government misrule and corruption.
It later became violent, however, after the death of its leader in 2009 while in police custody.
In the five years since, the shadowy sect has been blamed for numerous attacks – on places of worship and government institutions – and thousands of deaths in Nigeria.
The group has also been blamed for several earlier cross-border attacks in Cameroon.

Nigeria Donate $3.5m 2 Liberia,other - Health
The minister of health, prof Onyebuchi Chukwu, on
Wednesday said Nigeria had already donated
$3.5m as part of its intervention in the affected
countries.
Chukwu said the sum was made up of $500,000
to each of the countries and the balance to the
common ECOWAS Fund for the disease.
He also said 591 health practitioners had
volunteered to join the international force that
would go to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea to
help in the containment of the Ebola Virus
Disease.
He said the volunteers registered with his ministry
at three points in Lagos, Abuja and Port-
Harcourt.
Chukwu said this while speaking with State
House correspondents at the end of the weekly
Federal Executive Council meeting presided over
by President Goodluck Jonathan.
He said that he had already told a recent meeting
of the United Nations General Assembly on EVD of
Nigeria’s readiness to help the three countries.
He said, “I informed the United Nations General
Assembly that the President has already directed
the Federal Ministry of Health to train and send
health personnel to these three countries in the
area of special laboratory work to strengthen
capacity in those countries.
“I also informed them that as part of Nigeria’s
contributions to the international team that will
be set up to tackle Ebola Virus Disease in those
countries, already Nigeria volunteers from
different health professions have been registering
with us, willing to join the international force that
will go to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea to help
out with the containment.
“As of now, 591Nigerians have already registered
with us in three registries we opened in Lagos,
Abuja Port Harcourt.”
The minister however said there were certain
conditions to be met before the volunteers would
be allowed to leave the country.
He said the first step was for President Goodluck
Jonathan to approve their journey and mission
and that the volunteers would be properly trained
according to Nigeria’s standards, which, he said,
was fairly high.
Chukwu said he also told the meeting, which was
called to review the global situation on the
disease that Nigeria is now Ebola-free. He said
the country had had 19 cases with seven deaths
contrary to the 20 cases being reported by the
foreign media.
“Presently there is no single case of active Ebola
Virus Disease in Nigeria, no single contact that is
presently under surveillance in any part of the
country,” he declared.
He said the ban on repatriation of corpses as well
as inter-state movement of corpses was still in
force, adding that the ban remained except where
approval had been granted by the Minister of
Health.

Van Vicker: I haven't Contracted Ebola - Celebrities
Charming Ghanaian actor, Van Vicker has
discredited reports that he has been diagnosed
with the deadly Ebola Virus Disease.
An entertainment online platform reported
Tuesday that the actor contracted the virus while
he was out in Monrovia, Liberia's capital shooting
the sequel to the movie ‘Bendu Sudan’.
Other reports on social media also suggested that
Vicker has been quarantined and denied access
back to Ghana.
But speaking on the Starr Drive, the 'Hands of
Time' actor said the reports are disheartening.
“It's annoying. I checked the website and just
couldn’t believe my eyes. Why would someone
just sit somewhere and just write what they want.
Is there nobody that regulates the activities of
these websites?” he asked. “I don’t get the story.
It’s just not right!”
According to him, he cancelled the Liberia trip last
month when he heard the news of the outbreak.
“I read the story, my intention was to go to
Liberia to shoot...but I didn’t go”
Vicker who is also of Liberian lineage revealed on
the show that he is working with the UN response
team based in Ghana to help the situation in his
home country.
“My heart does go out to all Liberians and I want
them to know I have not abandoned them. I am
doing all I can to help them in this time of crisis.”
More than 3,400 people have died in the current
Ebola outbreak in West Africa mostly.
In Liberia, the death toll is at least 1,100.

New governor of Adamawa State, Bala Ngilari The acting Chief Judge of the state, Justice Ambrose Mammadi, swore Mr. Ngilari in Wednesday, hours after a federal court in Abuja sacked the acting governor of the state, Umar Fintiri.

Mr. Ngilari had complained that his “resignation” letter, constitutionally required to have gone to the ousted governor, was instead received and acted upon by the then speaker, Mr. Fintiri.

Justice Adeniyi Ademola held that Mr. Ngilari did not resign from office as deputy governor in line with Section 306 (1) (2) and (5) of the 1999 Constitution as amended.
The judge also ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to stop the state governorship bye-election slated for Saturday, October 11, and granted all the reliefs sought by Mr. Ngilari.
