Russia won’t bow to EU demands over sanctions—Lavrov on October 14, 2014 at 12:26 pm in News

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov struck a defiant note on Tuesday, saying Moscow was not planning to buckle to Western demands to ease sanctions over its handling of the Ukraine crisis. Speaking ahead of key talks with US Secretary of State John Kerry later Tuesday, Lavrov indicated however that Russia was open to mending fences with the European Union. “It goes without saying that we are not going to discuss some sort of criteria for the removal of sanctions,” Lavrov told members of the Association of European Businesses in Moscow. “Whoever introduced them should cancel them. “We are not going to implement someone’s far-fetched demands. We don’t know who is losing out more in terms of economy: Russia or the European Union.” Citing estimates from the European Commission released earlier this year, Lavrov said the total damage from sanctions could cost EU taxpayers 40 billion euros ($50.6 billion) this year and 50 billion euros next year, and he suggested those figures could be revised up. Lavrov, who is to discuss the Ukraine crisis with Kerry in Paris later in the day, said Russia was ready to put its European ties back on track. “I think that no clear-headed person in Europe would dispute an idea that there is no sensible alternative to improving ties between Russia and the EU.” Lavrov added that Russia was keen to begin talks on the issue of creating a free trade zone with the European Union, a Kremlin-backed idea that has so far failed to gain much traction. “We will be encountering obstacles in our efforts to deepen cooperation before we determine clear long-term goals for ourselves,” Lavrov said. Russia is facing its deepest period of international isolation since the end of the Cold War over its support for separatists in Ukraine, with Western sanctions dealing a blow to its already stuttering economy.

2015: Atiku picks APC’s presidential form for N27.5m on October 14, 2014 at 12:21 pm in News

By Levinus Nwabughiogu ABUJA- In a move that showcases his determination to seek nomination as the presidential candidate of All Progressive Congress, APC, former Vice President, Atiku Abubukar yesterday picked the presidential expression of interest and the presidential nomination forms of the party. The cost of the forms was totaled N27.5m. While the presidential form was purchased at N25m, the expression of the interest form cost N2.5m. In a brief ceremony held at APC’s national secretariat, Atiku who was accompanied by his campaign organization’s Director-General and former minister of aviation, Professor Babalolo Borishade amid other supporters said it was important to accord every person his democratic right under the party. He pointed out that what distinguished APC from other political parties in the country was the recognition of democratic tenets of transparency and justice. Though, he expressed surprised over the sudden ceremony, Atiku however later appreciated it. He said: “Mr. Let me on behalf of my entourage express our gratitude for the opportunity extended to us this afternoon. Actually I thought it was going to be a very quiet process and therefore, we quietly pay and quietly collect our forms, go and do the necessary. But we have been told that it requires a formal event like this. It is quite understandable Mr. Chairman because this is a party built on very solid democratic credentials of transparency, equity and justice. I therefore feel privileged and honored to be part of this process. “Mr. Chairman, I need not let you know my political antecedents as far as the provision of a level playing field for every member of this party because that is the only thing or one of the things that will make us different from the so called ruling party. Any body who believes he has a democratic right to exercise should be given that opportunity to exercise that right. It is left to the members of this party and the Nigerian public to make a decision. I don’t think it is the responsibility of any one of us as an individual or group to decide for this party or its membership for the people of this country. “Yes, as leaders, we have a responsibility to guide those coming behind but the guidance should be based on this firmly rooted democratic principle. Mr. Chairman, therefore, it is my singular honor and privilege to hand over to you or your representative two receipts: one, presidential expression of interest and the second one, presidential nomination form all totaling N27.5m and I believe I am now entitled to receive my forms and then go onto the next stage.” Receiving the presidential aspirant, the national chairman of APC, Mr. John Oyegun who expressed happiness over the development said that the train of APC has begun. According to him, the destination of the train was the Aso Rock Presidential villa. The chairman who also reminded Atiku of other interests in the party however assured of a rancour free primary election. “This is APC, we are a new party, new generation, a new nation and we are trying to point the way to the future and so, you are one of those who could be our president in very not too distant future, it is necessary that we tell the whole that APC train has started rolling. “It is necessary that we tell the whole that we represent the new perspective, we represent the finest and the democratic ideals. My prayer today is that God will give us that man that will change the destiny of this country. And so, as you have come, and I pray the others will come, it is the first opportunity to present you as members to the entire nation. So, it was very important that this ceremony should be undertaken. “You can eventually hear the relief all of the place that yes, truly the ball of this party has started rolling and that when it finally stops, it will be on Aso rock. So, I want to very formally present to you with all the good wishes of the party, first the expression of interest form which you have duly paid for and secondly, the nomination form for president. “And as I give it to you, it will be with prayer that God will give to us that president who will change the destiny of this nation; that president that will make Nigeria high again in every corner of this world; that person that will defend the interest of Nigerians in whatever part of the world they happen to live; that president that when other nations will subsequently look at us, they look at us with respect. “They will look at us with the eyes of the most populous Africa nation that will speak for all people of black nation in whatever corner of the world that they live. That is the mission that APC has set itself to rescue, redeem this country. I want to just end by saying that we are also looking forward to a contest between all our of presidential aspirants, each of them eminently qualified for what you are here for but they haven’t come. But we are looking for a contest that will be totally rancour free”, he stated.

3,200 Bakassi people still in refugee camp – Sen. Ita-Giwa

Sen. Florence Ita-Giwa on Tuesday said 3,200 Bakassi people displaced by the UN ceding of Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon were still in refugee camp. Nigeria formally ceded Bakassi to Cameroon on Aug. 14, 2008, halting fifteen years of border conflict. An UN-backed period of transition agreed by the two countries allow Cameroon to develop an administrative presence in the area. Ita-Giwa told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that affected persons, including men, women and children were desperate to return to their communities. “I am again appealing to the Federal Government to urgently resettle the 3, 200 Bakassi people still in refugee camp. “These people have identities and able to know where they are from originally. So, they cannot continue to be refugees in their country. “The displaced people urgently need to be resettled and compensation paid to the Cross River State Government in perpetuity,’’ she said. Bakassi was legally ceded by Nigeria to Cameroun in 2002 and Nigerians there had until Aug. 2013 to decide to become Cameroonians or leave the territory. The Senator, who lauded the Federal Government’s concern over the plight of the people, said the resettlement of the displaced Bakassi people was a cause she would continue to uphold. “I am obliged to ensure that these people still in refugee camp are resettled equitably. “They are more than anxious to return to their communities to continue their normal lives.

Chibok girls protest: Security beefed up around Presidential Villa

Security was on Tuesday morning beefed up around the Presidential Villa, Abuja, ahead of a planned protest rally by the BringBackOurGirls (BBOG) campaigners. The BBOG campaigners are pushing for the rescue of the schoolgirls abducted from the Government Girls’ Secondary School, Chibok, Borno, on April 15. In a statement by its Media Coordinator, Rotimi Olawale, on Monday in Abuja, the group threatened to march to the Villa on Tuesday “to engage with President Goodluck Jonathan’’. It said the purpose of the engagement was “to convey the urgency of the girls’ rescue and to hear directly from the president on the status of the rescue efforts by security agencies’’. The march is scheduled to begin at the Unity Fountain, located close to Transcorp Hilton Hotels, Maitama, and proceed to the State House through the Federal Secretariat. But as at 8.20 a.m. there has been heavy presence of armed security men at the two major gates leading to the Villa, apparently to forestall possible breakdown of order. At the gate approaching from the Fire Service side of Asokoro, armed policemen and soldiers had been stationed at the traffic light junction before the usual security checkpoint. The same situation played out at the Federal Secretariat end of the entrance. Armed policemen and soldiers from the Brigades of Guards were stationed at a spot between the Villa Gate and the access road that leads to the National Assembly. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that this is the second attempt by the group to take their protest to the Villa since the girls’ abduction. In May, the group marched to the Villa where some top government officials, including the Minister of State for FCT, Mrs Olajumoke Akinjide, addressed them on behalf of the president. Akinjide told them to direct their protest to terrorists and not the government, and urged them to learn from citizens of other countries who do not blame their governments for any terrorist act. Nollywood Actress Ronke Odusanya Is A Blatant Liar! - Woman Adams Odunayo, 1 hour ago Advertisement Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share Few days ago, news filtered in about how a particular woman, Folape Sokoya attacked popular Nollywood-Yoruba genre actress, Ronke Odusanya popularly known as Flakky Ididowo over husband. Ronke Odusanya Ronke Odusanya The Olabisi Onabanjo University graduate who was once romantically involved with Fuji act, Wasiu Alabi Pasuma was said to have allegedly married Folape’s husband of 12 years.Folape also made it known that she’s had three children for the man which makes it an evidence and a fact that the man is her husband. The actress however later debunked the rumor in a statement saying that she did not get married to the man but they were just friends. Although the man in question, Femi Anibaba has not said anything concerning this issue, the story has taken a new dimension. A woman, who claims to be a friend to Folape has however come out to open a can of worms about the actress.
n an interview with Nigeriafilms, Folape’s friend has openly knocked down Ronke’s explanations, stating with utmost conviction that the actress was and is still dating Anibaba and was the reason Folape’s marriage to the man broke up in the first place. Here’s what she had to say: ”Ok let all listen to this; I am a very good friend to this lady ‘FOLAPE SOKOYA’ and I have known her for almost 10yrs now, when all this first started, in 2008,as said by “Flakky” herself, that “Folape’ facebooked her to warn her about her secret affair with her husband and also confronted the husband who denied ever knowing “Flakky”. In fact, his exact words to his wife was “who does not know all these Yoruba actresses I only like her movies”. They talked it out that moment that was it. As time went on, “Mr. Femi Anibaba” still went on calling “Flakky even into late nights American time and as a heavily pregnant woman then, what could she have done with her condition; ‘Mr. Femi Anibaba’ even went to Naija that same year with his second daughter claiming to go see his mum but when he came back, ‘Folape’ found pictures of him and Flakky in his belongings and this ‘Flakky’ took a picture with their daughter then and Folape was angry at her husband then, who denied it all and said they only took pictures with her because she was a celebrity indeed.

The Reason I Fought With Bishop Oyedepo - Pastor Tunde Bakare

In an interview with Punch, Pastor Tunde Bakare shares his opinion on the use of Anointing Oil by Christians saying: “People like to create their own Tunde Bakare. I love God, I love people, I love the godly and the ungodly and I try within my God-given ability to teach the truth. The reason I fought with my friend, Bishop David Oyedepo, and tore his book, I remember when we resolved this problem in London, we came out of a plane, he took me aside and said he was angry with me because I tore his book. I said I didn’t tear your book, I tore my book. That is fine, you wrote it, I bought it, so it was my book I tore. I saw errors in that book because he said the anointing oil is not a symbol of the Holy Spirit that it is the life of God in a bottle. How can you write that and I would let it pass. No! If the anointing oil is the Holy Spirit, then Jesus is a lamb walking on four legs. These are metaphors and when you have the real, you leave the shadow. Besides it is for the sick in the New Testament. So, you can anoint the entire church if they are sick and I would wonder how a sick church can bring healing to a dying world.”Tunde Bakare who was a delegate at the National conference said his decision to participate was as a result of elders and also Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, who put his name down as a delegate to represent the South-West geo-political zone and insisted because of his relevance. Earlier this year, Bakare said he would not take a penny of the N12m allowance by President Jonathan speaking further on his decision he said: “I would not take a penny from the conference; I would not be given any allowance and I wrote a letter to that effect and they replied me. I did this so that if anything went wrong, I would retain my freedom to express myself freely. That does not mean others who took the allowance are bad people. No! We see things from different perspectives”. Pastor Tunde Bakare who is known for sharing his opinion on controversial political issues, however, said he is not a politician and he has no ambition or desire of becoming one. He said all he is after is to see things work out for the Nation. Tunde Bakare who contested in 2011 as running mate to Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, said before making up his mind on that decision prayed to God about it saying: “The truth is that if good people don’t participate in politics, then we will continue to endure the rule of idiots. he has no intention of seeking any elective office. READ ALSO: Pastor Tunde Bakare Reacts To Attempt On Buhari’s Life Tunde Bakare who spoke about his experience as a running mate to General Buhari recounted how he was called by the former head of state on January 15, 2011 and was asked but he rejected his offer. Not one to give up, Buhari told him to pray about it. Following the requests, Bakare said he called his wife, daughter and Pastor Adeboye twice about it who told him not to “be afraid, step in there, whether you win or lose, God is taking you somewhere.” Despite Bakare’s reluctance to take Buhari’s offer he said Buhari’s decision to make him his running mate was based on “his passion for Nigeria, he was once a Muslim and now a Christian”.His understanding of the geography, being that he lived in the North and was born in the South. His positive influence to pull the nation together, integrity. And that he wants someone who was remain honest and should he die in office like the former President, Yar’Adua he is sure he would carry on with his vision. READ ALSO: How To Prevent Political Crisis In Nigeria in 2015 – Pastor Bakare Bakare said: “The day before the final submission of names, former President Olusegun Obasanjo told El-Rufai that he was ready to support Buhari if he could drop me and replace me with Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as his running mate. El-Rufai ran to me, that this was what Obasanjo said.” Seeing that as an opportunity to opt out he pointed out reasons to Buhari why he thinks Okonjo-Iweala was the best candidate but he said Buhari’s response shocked him saying: “Pastor Bakare, I have waited long enough and today is the last day, if you are not going to fill the form, give it to me, I will look for someone until we can get a person like you. At that point, I became overwhelmed and I signed the form and El-Rufai seconded. That was the process; it was not an overnight thing.” Bakare who described Buhari has an incorruptible, reliable leader who loves his country said although they did not win the election he had no regrets working with Buhari, who he said gave him the opportunity to know he’s got love for both Christians and Muslim. Pastor Tunde who was quoted in 2012 saying President Jonathan was on a mission to ruin in Nigeria, however saidPresident Jonathan himself is a victim of circumstances who has had to learn on the job. Speaking on his meeting with the President, Bakare said at the appropriate time, it shall be revealed. READ ALSO: Bakare Advises FG To Apologise To Boko Haram “I think Jonathan is honestly doing his best but history would judge whether his best is good enough. The Nigerian issue is complex. It requires a level of capability and dynamism and that is not common among the current politicians.” Pastor Tunde Bakare who said the issue of Nigerian Churches being Theatre doesn’t apply to him but said “the difference between the cinema and the church in Nigeria is that for the cinema you pay a gate fee before you enter but in the church, they let you come in before they take from you”. It would be recalled earlier this year Pastor Tunde had stated his stand on the use of Anointing oil saying: “I am not against Anointing Oil. The thing is, it’s a Jewish Culture. They rub it on their bodies as protection against insects like your mosquito repellents. It was used extensively in the old testament for anointing …It is the power of God that heals, not the Oil”. Pastor Bakare is a former Vice Presidential candidate under the Congress for Progressive Change and Convener of the Save Nigeria Group (SNG).

Pastor Tunde Bakare Speaks On $9.3million Arms Deal

Bakare said: “You can not take the action of one person and blame it on the whole Christian body. Whoever owns the jet and involved you now them by name rather than blame it on the entire Christian body”. He said if he it is true about Ayo Oritsejafor saying he leased his private his jet to the company and had no issue with it, he should not be blamed but if otherwise, the truth has a way of coming out. READ ALSO : $9.3m Scandal: Chris Okotie Lambasts Oritsejafor However, reacting to the call for Oritsejafor to resign, he said he will never asked for resignation until the matter is properly judged as he stated there is a body that should investigated the matter. Watch video below Watch video It would be recalled that on September 5, 2014, two Nigerians and an Israeli attempted to smuggle the sum of $9.3 million conveyed in a private jet into South Africa which was seized by the country’s authorities . The seizure of $9.3m by the South African authorities has since trailed with a lot of controversies, especially after reports surfaced that the private jet used to convey the money belonged to the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor . Its reported, yesterday that the presidency denied Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, the national president of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN’s involvement in the controversial $9.3m arms deal in South Africa. “The linking of Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor is the most unfortunate thing; to put the very respectable, responsible, honest and sincere President of CAN in this matter is the extreme of mischief”. Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor although he said the private jet belongs to him he has, however, denied involvement in the controversial $9.3 million. “Please permit me to state clearly before God and before all of you here present today, that I am not a party to the movement of $9.3m from Nigeria to South Africa to purchase arms and ammunition. I am not part of the deal. I know nothing about it”.

Buhari Reveals Why He Is Contesting For 2015 Elections

Former head of state, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), on Monday blamed bad leadership for Nigeria’s woes, including the present insecurity in the country. Buhari said his insistence on governing Nigeria is borne out of his desire for a secured and egalitarian society. The All Progressives Congress presidential aspirant spoke in Ilorin, Kwara State, after his meeting with the state governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed. The ex-head of state said, “I had contested the presidential election three times and I lost three times and I ended up in Supreme Court three times. We thank God because the Constitution does not limit how many times you can contest. Whichever stage you are, once you are 18 and above, you are fit to apply for the country’s highest political office. They did not put age limit in the exercise. “I had ruled this country before in a different system. From 1999 till now, am sure you know what has been happening. “I believe what Nigeria needs now is to be secured and efficiently managed. This is the APC’s stand. And I will like to use this opportunity through my party and through the system to ensure a secured and efficiently managed Nigeria as the country is not being well managed now.” Speaking further: “This is up to the party and the people to choose the candidate to represent it at the presidential election. We want a level playing ground for everybody. Let Nigerians be given the impression that we care for them. Let them believe that they do matter, that all the efforts to salvage the country are for them. But if there is a consensus agreement, it is not forced on the people, all well and good. “It will save time and resources. But if people insist that the candidates should present themselves and let the people decide, it is all well and good. The system allows it.”

Obasanjo Is Morally Bankrupt – Kashamu - Politics

Chairman of the Organisation and Mobilisation Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South West, Prince Buruji Kashamu yesterday said that former President Olusegun Obasanjo is morally bankrupt. Kashamu said this in a statement he issued in Lagos in reaction to Obasanjo’s letter to the leadership of the PDP, in which the former president said he could not work with him because of his alleged criminal past. Chief Obasanjo had said in the letter that he had no grouse against anybody in his party, but he would not accept a wanted drug baron as the PDP leader in his region, the South West. The former president had insisted that the issue bordered on principle and morality. But Kashamu, apart from denying the allegation, said that the obvious question Nigerians should ask Obasanjo is whether he has any justification to moralise and pontificate at all, given his well-chronicled personal moral bankruptcy. He also maintained that Obasanjo’s statements exhibit his disdain for the rule of law and the authority of the courts “since this cocktail of lies comprise the same malicious falsehood that is the subject of the libel action I have commenced against him and in which trial is to commence tomorrow, Tuesday, 14th October, 2014”. The PDP chieftain said, “The indubitable fact of history that Baba Obasanjo has not told the world is that it was during his first tenure as president that he and former Beninoise president, Matthew Kerekou directed the relevant security agencies to give truthful evidence that rebutted the false allegation that I was a habitual criminal or involved in any drug related crime.” He also alleged that it was for this reason that the Interpol in Benin Republic and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Nigeria came to the London courts between 2000 and 2002 to give evidence during his incarceration and trial. Kashamu further alleged that chief Obasanjo used him to prosecute his battle against former Governor Gbenga Daniel and to wrest the control of the PDP from Otunba Daniel in 2011 and it was time to field candidates for the 2011 general elections, Obasanjo brought “his stooge”, Gen. Adetunji Olurin, and asked him to roll the party structure behind his anointed candidate. He said, “Despite his pretensions, the reason I have become the target of Obasanjo’s wicked campaign of calumny and blackmail is because he perceives me as his obstacle to the control of the PDP structures in Ogun State and in the South West. “Chief Obasanjo has publicly declared his opposition to the second term entitlement of President Goodluck Jonathan and had wanted to use the erstwhile National Secretary, Olagunsoye Oyinlola; the former National Auditor, Bode Mustapha and the ex-National Vice-Chairman, Segun Oni, to thwart Mr. President’s re-election. The almighty Allah Subhana wa tala used me to stand up to him and the rest is history. http://leadership.ng/news/386964/obasanjo-morally-bankrupt-kashamu

17 Lawmakers Press For Removal Of Adamawa Speaker - Politics

17 Lawmakers Press for Removal of Adamawa Speaker Indications emerged monday that 17 lawmakers of the Adamawa State House of Assembly were pressing for the removal of the embattled Speaker of the House of Assembly, Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri. It was alleged that the lawmakers were aggrieved because Fintiri never fulfilled his part of the agreement held prior to the impeachment of the former state Governor, Murtala Nyako, and the impromptu resignation of his deputy, Bala James Ngillari, now governor of the state to pave the way for him to rule the state. Sources closed to the assembly revealed that the lawmakers are mobilising for the removal of the speaker in order to adhere to federal character principles as enshrined in the nation’s constitution. According to some PDP stakeholders and lawmakers who spoke in confidence with journalists in Yola, if the zoning principle in the party is to be adhered to, it is unconstitutional for the speaker and the governor to come from the same constituency. They claimed that the removal of the speaker could be on the strength of the political crisis between the two politicians, so as to allow a peaceful administration reign in the state. It was further gathered that the embattled speaker could be impeached tomorrow when the lawmakers meet or asked to resign. Attempts made to reach the Chairman, Assembly Committee on Information and member representing Michika state constituency, Hon. Adamu Kamale, to comment on the development proved abortive as he said he was driving and promised to call back. As at the time of sending this report, he did not call back. However, another source alleged that it would be difficult to impeach the embattle Speaker because all the principal lawmakers of the state assembly were behind him. The source added that they might frustrate the removal moves if there was any. www.thisdaylive.com/articles/17-lawmakers-press-for-removal-of-adamawa-speaker/191232/
