President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday formally unveiled the new N100 commemorative notes at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The short ceremony which was initially scheduled for last Wednesday did not hold then because of the President’s journey to Burkina Faso. Vice President Namadi Sambo and the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Governor, Godwin Emefiele, joined the President to unveil the note during the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting. Shortly after presenting the note, Emefiele said it was issued to commemorate the 100 years of the nation’s amalgamation. He listed some countries that had before now issued currencies to mark epochal events to include Morocco, Russia and Costa Rica among others. He said the new note was produced with what he described as most advanced security features in the world. Emefiele listed the design platforms on which the note was made to include security, durability, attractiveness, cultural heritage and transformation. Jonathan lauded the CBN for coming up with the commemorative note, though it was coming a bit late since activities marking the nation’s centenary had been concluded. He recalled that commemorative N50 notes were also introduced to mark the nation’s 50th independence anniversary. Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, also commended the CBN for coming up with the notes. She specifically lauded the QRC feature on the back of the note. The code, if scanned with smart phones, leads users to a website where the nation’s history could be accessed. The minister also raised questions on the amount the CBN will use to print the new notes and whether it would be done locally. Speaking for the first time since his wife’s death, [her husband] Kwaku Keh told the Standard: “My wife and I were best friends. We had been trying to have a baby for some time but it had not happened for us even with the help of IVF. “Then in 2013 my wife got pregnant without medical intervention and our only son was delivered by caesarean section. I was overjoyed and could not wait for them to come home.” Mrs Keh remained in hospital after her son’s birth on September 18 last year to receive antibiotics for an infection. She developed acute respiratory distress syndrome and was transferred to Papworth, a specialist heart and lung hospital in Cambridge. She had told doctors of her refusal to receive blood products, and lawyers confirmed her wishes had to be obeyed. She was put on a machine at Papworth but it could not effectively re-oxygenate her blood without a transfusion. She died two days later. By MICHELLE FAUL / Associated Press Nigeria's ambassador to the United States has berated Washington for refusing to sell "lethal weapons" to fight his country's Islamic uprising, saying the extremists otherwise would have been defeated long ago. Adebowale Ibidapo Adefuye said the United States is letting down an old ally in its hour of need, and Nigeria's people and government feel abandoned. "The U.S. government has up till today refused to grant Nigeria's request to purchase lethal equipment that would have brought down the terrorists within a short time," Adefuye told members of the Washington-based Council on Foreign Relations Monday night. "We find it difficult to understand how and why, in spite of the U.S. presence in Nigeria with their sophisticated military technology, Boko Haram should be expanding and becoming more deadly." Adefuye said that Washington has refused Nigeria's requests to buy heavy weaponry because of allegations the defense forces have violated the human rights of Boko Haram suspects. It was not possible to get an immediate response from U.S. officials but U.S. laws ban sales of lethal weapons to countries whose military are accused of gross human rights abuses. Adefuye dismissed the allegations as rumors spread by political opponents as Nigeria prepares for presidential elections in February. An Associated Press investigation found Nigerian troops responsible for the deaths of thousands of detainees since a state of emergency was imposed in May 2013 in three northeastern states. In the latest such report, community leaders and family members told AP that soldiers raided poor homes in Potiskum, capital of Yobe state, on Nov. 5 and dragged away young men aged from 18 to 30. Soldiers later dumped 18 bullet-ridden bodies at the hospital mortuary, according to hospital records that identified victims including a tailor, a butcher, a student and a cattle trader. The military has not responded to requests for comment on that incident. The killings came two days after a suicide bomber killed 30 people in a procession of moderate Muslims. On Monday, Potiskum was further terrorized when a suicide bomber killed 48 students at an all-boys high school. The continued violence comes despite the Nigerian military's claim on Oct. 17 that Boko Haram had agreed to an immediate cease-fire. The militants have denied there is any truce and have responded with more and deadlier attacks. The extremists now control a swath of territory in northeastern Nigeria estimated to cover 20,000 square kilometers (7,700 square miles) along the border with Cameroon. "We must defeat terror," he said before a crowd at an Abuja stadium, announcing that he will run for re-election in February. "We are equipping the armed forces and deploying special forces this time to engage the terrorists and end this senseless war." He also promised, again, to "get our daughters free," referring to the more than 200 schoolgirls kidnapped in April whose plight has attracted international outrage. Boko Haram is better equipped than the military, mainly with arms looted from barracks and abandoned by fleeing troops, say governors in the northeastern states, other politicians and soldiers who have deserted the front. Nigeria has made at least two failed attempts to buy helicopter gunships and other weapons in South Africa. In September, South African customs officials seized $9.3 million in cash flown in on a private jet by two Nigerians and an Israeli. It was a "legitimate arms deal," said PRNigeria, a public relations firm that promotes the Nigerian government. In October, South Africa froze $5.7 million wired to the account of a South African arms dealer by Nigeria, saying the dealer no longer had a license to export weapons. Lagos State Governorship Aspirant, Special Adviser Arraigned For Murder - Politics - Wabsodlink

The atmosphere of the Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court was tense on Tuesday when a former Commissioner for Rural Development and a governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress, Tola Kasali, 62, was arraigned for murder. Arraigned with him were the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Politics and Legislative Matters, Musiliu Folami, 64, and Kasali’s Chief Security Officer, Tobun Abiodun, 38. The court was filled with party loyalists, supporters and family members of the accused persons, as many others stood outside the court. They were arraigned on four counts bordering on murder and unlawful possession of firearms. The police said the men conspired to kill one Musiliu Lamidi on November 9, 2014, around 2pm at Eko Tourism Hotel, Akodo, in the Ibeju-Lekki area of the state. The police added that they were found in possession of a pump-action gun, with number 6381, without a valid licence issued by the appropriate authorities. The corpse of the deceased was said to have been found on the premises of one of the defendants. The offences were said to be punishable under sections 231, 221 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011 and Section 27 (b)(1) of the Firearms Act, Cap 28 Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2011. Their pleas were not taken by the court for the offences. However, a senior state counsel, Femi Adamson, who came from the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, invoked a section of the law to take over prosecution from the police. He said, “I am a senior state counsel and I want to take over the prosecution of this case. This is pursuant to Section 211 (1b), (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.” The leader of the police team from the legal department of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Godwin Osuyi, said it was not right for the case to be taken from the police since the police had only sought to remand the defendants in custody pending legal advice. Osuyi, after agreeing to step aside, said, “Before I step aside, I wish to state that they were brought before this court for remand. They have not been formally charged.” But the court ruled that since the case belonged to the state, it could take charge of it at any time. The state prosecutor, Adamson, thereafter applied for the remand of the three defendants in custody, citing Section 264(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State, 2011. However, the leader of the seven-man defence team, Taiwo Ajala, opposed the application for remand. According to him, there were no allegations before the court, but mere rumours, which should be struck out. He said, “So far, what are before your honour are not charges, but mere rumours, which have no place in a court of law. These rumours have been elevated to the point of allegations. “To raise rumours to allegations, one would have expected the prosecution to depose to an oath so that the court can look into it. But this is missing. “Accordingly, I apply that the defendants be granted bail. Jurisprudentially, the reason behind remand is if the court is not sure that the defendants will attend court proceedings from time to time. “I crave the indulgence of this court to the social standing and circumstances of the defendants. The first is currently the special adviser to this government. The second has a lot of prefixes to his name. He was a former Commissioner for Rural Development. His impacts are felt on our roads. He was also a former Commissioner for Special Duties, while the third defendant had, at different times been a chief security officer of the state. They are all known by reputation.” Ajala said if the defendants were not granted bail, it would affect the running of the government and the residents of the state. After making his submissions, the prosecutor said he was not objecting to bail. “With all due respect, bail is at the discretion of the court and the court is guided by principles. I have come to realise that these are people serving the government of the day in different capacities,” he said. The Chief Magistrate, Tunbosun Abolarinwa, in his ruling, expressed disappointment in the prosecution for not being able to support the remand application brought before the court. He said, “What is before the court is a remand application, but the police who brought it have not been able to support same. This is probably why the defence counsel referred to the charges as mere rumours. “If their movement is restrained, it will bring serious discomfort to them and people associated with them and will be a disservice to the society. This court sees them as people who should uphold the law of the land and the orders of this honourable court. “This court has confidence in their ability to show up in court. “The reasons for remand brought by the prosecutions are not reliable and cannot sustain the charges.” Abolarinwa granted the defendants bail on “self recognition” and ordered the prosecution to verify their addresses and places of work. The chopper had five crew members said to be American military personnel and a Nigerian. The Americans, it was learnt, were among the 40 United States military personnel helping the Nigerian military in the on-going operations against Boko Haram in the North-East. An eyewitness, who resides close to the crash site, told one of our correspondents that the helicopter hovered round the area for about 30 minutes before it crashed. He said that he rushed to the crash site but found out that all the crew members, except the pilot, had pulled themselves out of the wreckage of the helicopter. The witness added that before security personnel arrived the scene, he overheard one of them (crew members) directing that the helicopter be set ablaze. “The pilot and two other persons suffered injuries. The pilot had a fracture on his leg and hand. An Air force ambulance came and evacuated all of them,” he said. A military source said that the 40 US soldiers had shortly after their arrival in Nigeria visited Mararaba-Mubi on Sunday for an on the spot assessment of the insurgents’ activities in the area. Another source said, “The helicopter took off from the airport in Yola and came down just a few metres from the state capital. “They were five crew members, including four Americans, They all survived the crash. But those who were injured are being treated in the hospital.” Efforts to get the reactions of the American Embassy in Abuja as of 7pm on Monday failed. But the Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Chris Olukolade, who confirmed the crash in an electronic mail, said the helicopter involved was on a training mission in the area. He said, “A NAF Helicopter with call sign Shark 23 on a training mission executed a controlled forced landing four minutes after take-off at the runway approach end of the Yola International Airport today (Monday) at about 0930hours. “There is no casualty recorded as all the crew members have been recovered back to the base. “The NAF headquarters has already set up an investigation panel to unravel the circumstances that led to the incident.” When journalists visited the site of the crash, stern-looking military personnel had cordoned it off. Meanwhile, the Adamawa State Government has called on its citizens to be calm, stressing that the military was on top of the situation. The spokesman for the government, Mr. Phineas Elisha, said that “Adamawa, as of today, was better than Adamawa of yesterday. “People should not panic or be afraid. The government is on top of the situation. Insurgency will soon be history because the military are on top of the situation,” Elisha said.

At least 98 other students and teachers were seriously injured in the incident which occurred hours after Northern governors called on President Goodluck Jonathan “to declare a total war and eliminate Boko Haram in our midst before the 2015 elections.” Jonathan, who will on Tuesday(today) formally declare his intention to seek a re-election in 2015, had shortly after the news of the schoolchildren’s killing, assured Nigerians that those behind the act would be apprehended. Although no group has claimed responsibility for the Monday attack, residents believe that the bomber must be a member of Boko Haram. A bomber had last week attacked a procession of Shiite movement in the town, killing over 30 persons. Our correspondents gathered that the teenager bomber beat the school’s security and joined the students and teachers who were about to have their prayer before detonating explosives strewn to his body at about 7.45am. An eyewitness who did not want his name in print said that the bodies of “about 50, including three teachers, that died due to the attack were scattered on the assembly ground. He added, “We heard a loud bang and since then the area was cordoned off but ambulances were seen going into the school to pick corpses and take the injured to the hospital. “Both members of staff and students who were not hurt wept profusely as they struggled to rush the wounded to the hospital. “Potiskum has been in pandemonium since 7. 45am as a result of the attack on the school. I can tell you that all schools in the town have been closed now as parents have gone to pick up their children. There is wailing everywhere, especially around the school where the incident happened.” The state government and the Force Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Ojukwu, however put the number of the students and teachers that died at 35 and 47 respectively. Ojukwu confirmed that the bomber wore the school’s uniform and mingled with the students before detonating “some improvised explosive devices.” Ojukwu said, “The male suicide bomber was dressed as a student and he was able to enter the school and join the students on the assembly ground where he detonated the IEDs on him. The blast killed 47 students and teachers and injured 98 others. We have secured other schools around the area and investigation has commenced.” He explained that the bodies of the dead victims were deposited at the General Hospital mortuary close to the school. Gov. Gaidam closes schools, asks for emergency rule’s scorecard The state Governor, Ibrahim Gaidam, who said the attack had left him heartbroken, closed all public schools in the town pending improved security situation. He added that he lacked enough words to describe the incident, but challenged Jonathan to come out and explain to all Nigerians, especially those from the North-East what had been achieved through emergency rule in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa states. The governor, in a statement by his spokesman, Abdullahi Bego, said, “This (Monday) morning, our state woke up to a very sad and heart-breaking news of a bomb attack on our young students at the Government Comprehensive School, Potiskum in which no fewer than 35 students were killed and many more injured. “The governor has noted that this is the fifth time in a little over one year when schools in Yobe State were attacked and students killed. “He deeply regrets that all of these dastardly attacks took place under a climate of emergency rule declared in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa states by President Jonathan. “In theory, the emergency rule declaration was a signal that more vigorous steps would be taken to protect lives and property in the affected states and restore peace and security. Unfortunately, these have not been fully the case. Instead of forcing insurgents and criminals to flee; the insurgents are forcing innocent people to flee and making life miserable for everyone. “Governor Gaidam believes that President Jonathan has a very urgent responsibility to explain to the people of Yobe State and people all across the affected states why murderous and callous insurgent and criminal attacks are still on the rise despite the state of emergency. “The governor also insists that it was not just enough for the Federal Government to condemn the almost daily rounds of violence. He believes urgent action must be taken right now to restore a fast waning public confidence by doing whatever it takes to stop the escalating violence. “He has ordered for the immediate closure of all public schools around the Potiskum area until a full review of the situation is undertaken.” The governor however called on all people to exercise restraint and continue to pray for the intervention of Allah. The governor directed hospital authorities in Potiskum, Nguru and Azare to provide immediate medical support to victims of the attack free of charge. Perpetrators’ll be brought to justice –Jonathan Jonathan on Monday promised that no matter how long it would take, his administration would ensure that all those responsible for the killings were brought to justice. He said the same fate awaited all those behind continuing acts of terrorism across the country. Jonathan said this in a statement made available to journalists by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati. He extended his commiseration to the government and people of Yobe State on the death of the students. He also sympathised with all parents who lost their children and wards in the attack. The statement read in part, “The President condemns the dastardly murder of the students on their school’s assembly ground as they prepared to begin another week of study in pursuit of a better life for themselves and their families. “He assures the grieving parents and people of Yobe State that no matter how long it takes, the Federal Government will ensure that all those responsible for the senseless murder of so many promising youngsters and the continuing acts of terrorism across the country are brought to justice and made to pay for their atrocious crimes. “The President similarly assures all Nigerians that in spite of seeming setbacks, his administration remains fully committed to winning the war against insurgency and terrorism. “Nigeria, President Jonathan affirms, will ultimately overcome the current security challenges imposed by domestic terrorists and their foreign allies, with the dedication of its Armed Forces and national security agencies, as well as the continued support and cooperation of all patriotic citizens.” Jonathan had before the statement during the inauguration of the Sir Ahmadu Bello Foundation secretariat in Kaduna said his administration remained resolute in the protection of lives and property of Nigerians . The President, represented by the Minister for Special Duties and the supervising Minister of Labour, Alhaji Tanimu Turaki, said the issue of security was a collective responsibility and not of security agents alone. According to him, his administration would faithfully continue the war against terrorists in the country. The President, who extolled the virtue of the late Premier of the defunct Northern Region, Ahmadu Bello, also said that his government was still disposed to dialogue with Boko Haram. He however noted that for those not prepared for dialogue, the Nigerian Army had the capacity to overrun them. Northern govs want total war against Boko Haram The Chairman of the Northern State Governors’ Forum, Babangida Aliyu, who attended the event, said unless the Federal Government declared a total war against Boko Haram, its members might overrun the North. We must therefore crush them.” Atiku, Mark, Saraki outraged A former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, Senate President David Mark and a former Kwara State Governor, Bukola Saraki, condemned the killings and called for a concerted effort to wipe out Boko Haram. Atiku said in a statement by his media office in Abuja that the latest bombing once again underscored the need for the government at all levels and “our elders and opinion leaders to find a permanent solution to the insurgency which has ravaged our country for the past five years.” He said, “One expects that knowing the anti-education mindset of the perpetrators of these heinous crimes, the relevant authorities should have done their bit to ensure that at least, our educational institutions are provided with additional security.” Mark, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Paul Mumeh, expressed regret over the incident and commiserated with the government and people of Yobe State, especially the bereaved parents over the sad development. He asked the members and sponsors of the “barbaric, senseless, and inhuman attack ” to stop it in the interest of peace and unity. Mark said, “The war on Nigerians by terrorists without boundaries where men, women, children and even the unborn are victims speaks volumes of the agenda of the terrorists. “What is the offence of these innocent children? Even in warfare, there are boundaries. Even when enemies are known, women and children are usually spared, talk less of schoolchildren. “No matter the level of anger, it cannot be endless. It is time for a ceasefire. What do we achieve by ceaseless killings. How can we suddenly forget our brotherhood?” Mark, therefore, called on security operatives to step up action against the terrorists stressing that, “with increase intelligence and surveillance , a lot could be achieved.” Also, Saraki lamented the killing and asked Jonathan to end the insurgency in the North-East. Disappointed by the refusal of the United States to help Nigeria procure military weapons to combat Boko Haram, the federal government has now openly expressed its dissatisfaction with the American government decision, arguing that the Americans were letting Nigeria down at her hour of need, Empowered Newswire reports. Speaking Monday while receiving a delegation of the U.S. Council on Foreign Relations, the Nigerian Ambassador to the United States, Professor Ade Adefuye said both the Nigerian people and the government feel abandoned by America. According to Mr. Adefuye “I am sad to inform you that the Nigerian leadership: military and political, and even the general populace, are not satisfied with the scope, nature and content of the United States’ support for us in our struggle against terrorists.” Continuing, the Nigerian envoy stated that “we find it difficult to understand how and why in spite of the U.S. presence in Nigeria with their sophisticated military technology, Boko Haram should be expanding and becoming more deadly”. Reviewing the situation further, Mr. Adefuye said that at first, Nigeria had problems with the manner in which intelligence was being shared, adding that even though the U.S. Government claims that the problem has been addressed, “it is still there”. He cited an example of an incident that happened in Baga in 2013, when human rights groups and the opposition press reported that based on pictures taken from satellite, over 1600 houses were destroyed in a village that has less than 600 houses. Besides, Mr. Adefuye stated regarding the video reports of human rights violations involving attacks on women and children purported to have been carried out by Nigerian soldiers in Boko Haram affected areas that those activities were carried out by Boko Haram members wearing stolen Nigerian army uniforms. He explained that disguise and subterfuge are standard practices of insurgent groups; and that the Chibok abduction of our school girls by Boko Haram succeeded because the girls thought that they were being carried to safety by soldiers of the Nigerian army. He went on to say that the Boko Haram issue is becoming heavily politicized especially with the approach of the general elections in 2015. He, therefore, implored the embassies of western nations based in Nigeria to check and re-check their facts, and not use half-truths and rumours as the basis of their reports and recommendations to their capitals. He argued that the alleged violations are unfortunately the basis of U.S.’ refusal to sell necessary lethal equipment to Nigeria in order to fight Boko Haram. Many students are feared killed in a suicide bomb blast on Monday morning at Government Comprehensive Science Secondary School, Potiskum in Yobe. GOVERNOR Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State on Friday inaugurated the biggest automated edible oil refinery and margarine company in Sub-Saharan Africa in Ibadan, with a pledge that his administration would continue to do all within its powers to ensure that the state continued to be the preferred destination of investors in Nigeria. The firm, Rom Oil Mills Limited, a subsidiary company of Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc, is expected to refine crude palm kernel oil, crude palm oil and crude soyabean oil into refined oil and distilled fatty acids. Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Ajimobi said that the effect of the employment generation that the company would give the people of the state, was his own idea of stomach infrastructure. “This, indeed, is our idea of the so-called stomach infrastructure. We thank the management of the company for their implicit trust and confidence in our state. You have indeed vindicated our stance,’’ he said. The governor added that the cumulative effects of his administration’s developmental drive and consequent influx of investors into our state would result in employment generation and empowerment of the people which, he said, would positively impact millions of our people, as “it is the best and most dignifying stomach infrastructure ever’’. Ajimobi said the establishment of the firm, a-400 metric tonnes per day universal refinery, was another testimony to his administration’s leadership and “investors- baiting” policies. He described the development as the dividends of the peaceful atmosphere which his administration brought back to the state at its inception, as well as the enabling environment which had been attracting foreign investment. He also stressed that the management of the company would never have invested their billions of naira in a violent-prone and dirty Oyo State of the past. The governor, while stating that thousands of the sons and daughters of the state would be employed by the company, added that this would have multiplier effects on over a million of their dependants. Governor Ajimobi expressed satisfaction with the rate at which investors had been trooping to the state, stating that “Oyo State boasts of the presence of a leading soya milk manufacturing company in Nigeria, the largest bread-making factory West Africa, the Number One day-old chicks agricultural company in Nigeria, the biggest support service provider for the telecoms industry in Nigeria, among others. “If you add the largest Shoprite outlet in West Africa that has been recently sited in our state, you will understand how a secured and peaceful atmosphere, as well as an environmentallyconducive state, is essential for employment-generation and indeed, the economic development of the people. “Add all these to the rebirth of night life in the capital city, as manifested in the many hospitality industries that have sprung up in the nooks and crannies of Oyo State, you will realize why development experts say that peace and security are the foundation of any society,’’ he said.. The Head Driver to the Nassarawa state Governor, Umaru Al-Makura, Abdullahi Mairuwa, was shot dead this morning November 8th by unknown gunmen while he was traveling with his wife to his hometown in Keana Local Government Area of the state. Mr Mairuwa, who was in charge of all the drivers at the government house, was shot dead at Tudun Adabu Rd along the Obi-Keana-Awe round-about after his car was intercepted by the assassins. He was reportedly shot dead at close range. His wife, who was in the care with him, was not harmed.

Winners' Chapel International, which is currently under investigation by the Charity Commission, wants to open the school at its Dartford site. Human rights campaigners and the National Secular Society are urging the government to turn down the school bid. The church, whose leader Bishop David Oyedpo was filmed accusing a woman of being a witch, declined an interview.

The organisation, which has its headquarters in Nigeria, is known as Living Faith Church Worldwide and also Winners' Chapel International (WCI). Bishop Oyedepo, its leader in Nigeria, has been shown on YouTube slapping a woman and accusing her of being a witch. His son David Oyedepo Junior is the pastor at WCI's European headquarters in Dartford, where the church organisation wants to open Kingdom Heritage Model School for children aged four to seven. But groups including the National Secular Society (NSS) have raised concerns amid claims the church links child "disobedience" to witchcraft - citing the David Oyedepo Ministries website, which states "disobedience is as terrible as witchcraft". Stephen Evans, from the NSS, said the Metropolitan Police had investigated 27 cases of child abuse related to witchcraft this year. He said: "There's a need to be vigilant and there's a need to tackle this. You don't do this by allowing organisations that believe in witchcraft and are associated with witch-hunting to open in the UK." The school application is being considered by the government. The Charity Commission confirmed concerns raised about Winners' Chapel International included conflicts of interest and the charity's financial management. Two days after they handed over some 42 suspected Boko Haram terrorists to the Borno state government, military officials at the 7 Division of the Nigeria Army today freed yet another set of 125 suspects after weeks of investigation absolved them of alleged complicity with the terrorist group. The spokesman of the 7 Division, Maiduguri, Usman Sani, a colonel, told journalists during the ongoing handover ceremony that the 125 released suspects were part of the 152 Boko Haram suspects arrested in September this year. He said after thorough military investigation, the 125 were deemed clean and had to be released. The 125 released suspects were ferried into Maiduguri after a detour journey from Biu through Gombe, via Yobe state to Maiduguri. One of the released detainees told PREMIUM TIMES, “We have spent over 45 days in military detention but we thank God that our lives were spared. We went through pains and suffering there, but we can’t blame them much since they still were magnanimous to release us at a time human life is no longer valued “. Security officials had arrested several persons fleeing towns in Northeast Nigeria at the peak of the Boko Haram attacks in September. Most of them were taken in while hiding in trucks conveying livestock to the southern part of the country. Borno state Governor, Kashim Shettima, is yet to take delivery of the suspects as he is still being awaited to disengage from another function to receive them . The military had on Thursday released a first batch of 42 suspects. The 42 suspects, after months and years in detention, were cleared of all suspicions following thorough investigations. The military said three of the 42 released suspects were foreigners from Chad, Cameroon and Burkina Faso. Mr. Usman, who handed the freed suspects over to Governor Kashim Shettima, said they were arrested during various military raids. Mr. Usman said each of the freed prisoners were given N100,000 to enable them continue with their normal lives as free citizens. “We in the Nigeria army will continue to do our best in the ongoing fight against insurgency until we get rid of this problem,” he said. Mr. Shetima commended the military for its magnanimity. “We commend the fairness, equity and justice displayed by the Nigeria Armed Forces towards releasing anybody found not to be involved in these terrorist activities,” he said. “Amongst them are students, tailors, mechanics, provision stores owners and of course, quite a handful of them are drivers. We have a moral obligation to ensure that these young men at this time of their lives are actively engaged. Along this line, I wish to direct the road maintenance agency to include those that are drivers as employed truck drivers, while those that are tailors should be engaged in sewing uniforms for students and pupils in line with our education transformation program. “Those that are farmers should be given the resources to improve their farming; while the traders would be given some token in addition to what the military gave them to boost their trade. The students among them should be assisted to return to school.” Some of the freed prisoners had spent detention times ranging from three years, two years to some months. Private Sector Investment In Cement Industry Hits $7bn - Business - Wabsodlink

Olusegun Aganga, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, on Friday said the Federal Government has attracted new private sector investment worth $7 billion into the cement sector in the last three years. Aganga stated this at the 4th Annual Seminar for Industry, Trade and Investment Correspondents and Editors in Abuja. According to him in 2011, the installed capacity in the cement sector is 16.5 million metric tons per annum. “Today it is 39.5 million metric tons. When we came in, there were about $9 billion investment in the cement sector, but today it is more than $15 billion. “In 2011, the direct and indirect jobs from the cement sector was less than 600,000 today the sector provides about 2.2 million direct and indirect jobs,’’ he said. He said the federal government spent at least $5.2 million in the importation of cement, but since 2013 the present administration has not issued any import license. “Our main focus for the cement sector, going forward, is to improve the standard of cement and to bring the price down. Cement manufacturers must do it because we do not do price regulation. “There was announcement a few days ago that one of the cement manufacturers is bringing down the price of its 32.5 by 40 per cent from N1,700 per bag to N1,000. “The 42.5 is coming down from around N1,800 to about N1,150 per bag,’’ said the minister. He said there have been complaints about what was happening in the sector, urging Nigerians not to worry because the government was aware of its policies. The minister said that a new anti competition policy that would provide a level playing field for all investors in the Nigerian economy would soon be rolled out by the federal government. “We have a competition policy, we have anti-trust law that we are looking at and we have competition Bill that is going to the National Assembly. “We will make sure that industrialists and investors across the country continue to have the confidence that everyone will play on a level playing ground,’’ he added. Aganga noted that President Goodluck Jonathan had initiated and implemented far-reaching industrial policies which have helped to diversify the nation’s economic and revenue base. “The policies are also to attract fresh foreign direct investment, create employment and increase the capacity utilisation of key manufacturing sectors of the economy. “When the name of the Ministry was changed from Commerce and Industry to Industry, Trade and Investment the emphasis was for us to focus on industrialisation, trade and attracting investment across all sectors,’’ he said.
